D40x and 18-200VR Great travel combo!

I just got back from 3 weeks in Greece/Italy and all I carried was the D40x with a 18-200VR attached. Only a few times did I wish I hd a wider angle lens. All in all I was impressed with the quality of the images, and the compactness/weight combo. Definitely the best travel combination (and the VR allowed me to get some shots that wouldn't have been possible). Highly recommended.

Re: D40x and 18-200VR Great travel combo!

I traveled Italy for two weeks last year with the 18-200VR on my D200 as well as toting around a 12-24mm and 50mm. I found 90% of my images were made with the 18-200. If I had it to do again that would be the only lens I take, along with my D40 (how I wish it was available at the time).

Don't get me wrong, the D200 is a great camera, but for travel the D40/x is an amazingly light package.

Great shots! I particularly like #2 & 3.

I also have a D200 which I absolutely love, but I felt it was just too big to be lugging around through museums and the like. So the D40x gave me the same resolution in a smaller package. I had to really discipline myself not to take other lenses as well. I have a 12-24mm and it would have been nice on maybe a dozen shots. I just couldn't consider another pound in my small backpack for three weeks!

A few years back I took a FE2 (film) with a 35-135mm zoom to Europe and it was perfect; so I was trying to the duplicate the size/quality package this time around. I think it was a success, and I'll be using teh D40x more for my field forays and leaving the D200 to the studio work.

Re: D40x and 18-200VR Great travel combo!

I've come to an understanding with my cmeras. They know that if I'm driving to a landscape location and I don't expect to do a lot of walking/climbing/etc then the D200 gets to take the trip, but if I'm flying, doing a lot of physical exertion or otherwise want to travel as light as possible, the D40 gets the green light.

They haven't argued about it much, but my poor D2H is feeling a bit miffed that it's been relegated to "family" shots... which I agree is something of an overkill for it.

I've been nothing but impressed with the D40 series. Now if only we could get a nice little pancake lens or two to go with it...

Hi. Fantastics shots you have there in your gallery!!

I have just bought the 18-200VR for my D70 and was wandering what in-camera settings you used for your shots and any PP.

Thanks

As you can see I prefer Aperature Priority (with a little Exp compensation if needed - check your histograms) and I have found better results leaving the WB on Sunny then tweaking it in Capture NX, if it needs it (rather than using Auto WB as this is subject to change for each shot.) I also found the shots up to ISO 400 to be very good, 800 starts to get a little dicey.

Pic 1: aperature Priority, NR off 1/8 sec. at f7.1 WB sunny ISO 400
Pic 2: aperature Priority, NR off 1/13 sec. at f5.0 WB sunny ISO 100
Pic 3: aperature Priority, NR off 1/13 sec. at f3.5 WB sunny ISO 800
Pic 4: aperature Priority, NR off 1/13 sec. at f5.0 WB sunny ISO 400

Thanks for looking.
