It's also going to be way too expensive for me to care about...

in other news, it depresses me when I think about what some people have done in the world, and here I am sitting on my butt talking about digital cameras... There are more important things I could be doing, and there are more important thigns going on in the world. Too bad we can't take all this energy and apply it to something useful.

of course! It would also have an internet forum that would allow you to go post questions about backfocus.

Let's see what happens at the end of June...

chbutcher:

1. Something could be up this time, as this "rumor" has even made it's way into a Photography "PodCast" that I subscribe to, and the Photographer that mentioned the purported "New DSLR" and "New Lenses", is a staunched Canon Fan, who said that even if Nikon does "blow away Canon" with this thing, it's good as it "takes competition to get us better and better products"...

2. At this point, all any of this is , "are rumors" ---- still, I do believe something seems to be going on.... (but, my "end of June", could be somewhat off; still who knows, and most of us don't care anyway, as our current Nikon equipment is already quite good !!)

Hmmm..... June 26 is the day that the movie "Shooter" is released

And, I do intend to purchase the Apple "iPhone" that will be released next week on June 28, 2007, and already have a number of photos in iPhoto to start using with it !!

Re: lets not hold our breath (nt)

there's been a gathering of pace on the rumormill
now about a dozen times since 2004, over the d3.
a lot of it seemed reasonable then, too.

I suspect there's plenty of life left in the rumourmill.

plenty. i heard it myself today, from my local authorized nikon dealer, who reported to me that the official nikon sales rep told him that the d3 is coming, and

"they're not using the term 'full-frame.' they say it's a 35mm-sized sensor."

still, i MIGHT believe it if and when they make an official announcement.

Re: D3 on June 26th???

Well, at least June 26th is not completely unrealistic as release date:

The D2h was released July 22nd (back in 2003) and the D2Xs was released 1st of June (last year). So summer releases of new pro cameras are not uncommon for Nikon.

Why not just throw a dart at a calendar?

That would be just as accurate as engadget repeating Internet forum rumors.

Cheers,

Thanks. I'll do that. I did not realise such accurate methods existed. I'm out of darts. I guess a harpoon gun would be just as good?

"it should be within 24 hours"

I would have expected more leaks than an over 60's Bingo night.

Sorry to disappoint you all, but the date is 25th of july. Thats the date for release of new lenses (and possible a new body).

Just accept it. The release is in late Q3 or early Q4.

The source of this whole speculation on July 25th is Nikons anniversary date.

There will be no releases until this autumn. Then there will be several releases, lenses and at least one camera body (the D3).

Just accept it.

Prediction

Lets see what we really know, or can reliably guess:

(a) There will be new cameras announced.

(b) There may (or may not) be a FF body. Bear in mind that all formal reports and interviews from Nikon itself have been playing this down.
(c) We don't know when the announcements will be.
(d) Rumours of announcement dates occur about every three months or so.

(e) The most likely scenario is that there will be more pixels than a 1DS Mk II (but that this could be overtaken by a 1DS MkIII when it comes out.

(f) The most likely source of a sensor is Sony, and this will probably still not match Canon's latest for High ISO performance.

(g) When it does come out, there will probably be "bugs" that have lots of people saying how awful it is (as D200 banding, 1D MkIII focussing etc.) but this will be fixed in 3 months or so.

(h) There will be lots of features. If FF, there will most likely be an HSC that gives an APS size picture for use with DX lenses.

(i) The longer Nikon leave it before announcing a new model, the greater the jump in specification needs to be.

So my view is (i) that it is quite possible that a D3X will be announced tomorrow, but it is equally likely that it won't be until July, or September for shipment just before Christmas, or possibly next year. It is also possible that an announcement tomorrow could be a whizzy point and shoot model.

(ii) While it may have lots of features to make everyone jump up and down, the actual performance and IQ may be not significantly better that a Canon equivalent, and may be overtaken by Canon anyway when the 1DS MkIII comes along.

(iii) Because of the continued speculation and "blow Canon away" type rumours, the actual machine, when it arrives, may be something of a disappointment.

I hope I'm wrong, and that Nikon announces a world-beater this week. But I'm not holding my breath.

I hope you get some sleep!

All of these dates and deadlines are wishful thinking and hypothesizing. Since Mars and Mercury will be lined up on July 3, that's when I bet the announcement will be made!

Seriously, don't hold your breath; get some rest and think about something else. Sure, there will be a D3-something at some point and some new lenses will probably also come out, but they will come when they come. -Joe
