Sony Alpha Price drop again

Sony Alpha price drop again..... dual kit going for $1899 + free gifts...

Does this mean the new Alpha is coming out soon?

Its SGD$1899. Sony seldom lower its price unless a new product is out.

I would think they are trying to keep up sales momentum.

With only one dslr model so far, there is only one way to do this.

You have to keep in line....

With competitors products...

No point selling at £100 + over a very similar spec model.......people will just buy the other make.

Course...some will pay more..but you have to have some parity on this..all the entry level SLR's offer similar specs etc........

And new models are always priced higher. Does it mean there is a new entry level SLR out soon? Probably not...this year anyway.

Walmart online has also dropped price for the 100k alpha, now at $699.00. Still far from that $400.00 we have read about some days ago. Still..

Not this year

B&H is currently selling the alpha 100 body for $630. That is about what I remember from the last time I looked. That is $40 less than what they want for a Canon 400D body only and about $100 more than what they want for a Canon 350D. These prices reflect what is needed to sell in the current market. Even when Sony does add an upgrade of the Alpha 100, they may copy Canon's approach and still keep the old version around at a lower price point.

Re: Not this year

Well where I come from I found that 2 shops in which I looked dropped the price for the basic alpha kit(with 17-80 lens) for around 50 euros. One shop is online and the other is a real store.

Interesting you say this because:

http://www.dyxum.com/dforum/forum_posts.asp?TID=12704

The above link is a translated interview with a sony rep.

A question was posed about the potential of there being another entry level model for the alpha line, and here are a couple of interesting excerpts from the answer.

"...The meaning of this announcement (of the 2 new alpha models) is that we believe
these two products have the highest demand, so we are working on developing them
first. (note: developing first)

...But at this point our number one priority is to complete a 3 tiered lineup that goes from top to
bottom. " (note: from top to bottom)

so top to bottom.

Could this suggest the flagship model comes out, then the high amateur, and then a remake of the entry level? Who knows...time will tell.

For now, Im enjoying the families new alpha 100

Peace

Lucky Americans (well Im American in Europe).

Price is about $1,080 and I got mine for approx. $920 here in Hungary. (so I saved over $150)

...prices finally coming down to match the U.S. price...of last year (but of course this price is including tax for the body & lens)

Hmm nobody really knows..but to me it makes sense to have the semi pro body out ist.

Pro segment isnt a massive seller.........not for sony at present. The semi will nab both some working photographers (and I am starting in this..so particular interest here).......and amateurs who want more.

So me bet is semi ist...

Pro some time later..

Makeover for the A-100 sometime next year

Re: Sony Alpha Price drop again

The camera isn't even a year old yet.

The price of it will keep dropping until the day it is replaced which isn't likely till PMA 08 at the earliest.

People need to relax, price drops don't mean anything.

Re: Not this year

It's been 630 for a while. But for months the price has gone up and down at BH.

They just put out more kits the otherday, so I expect it to hold some for a while longer. The A100 is a year old in about a month, maybe we will see a small drop then.

We are almost mid month, so BH will cut the prices on a few Alpha items here soon. Something has got cheaper once a month since january.

Re: Sony Alpha Price drop again

It is more likely that there willl be an upgrade rather than replacement for the A100. All the other cameras usiing the 10Mp chip have better noise levels at high ISO so it is possible that Sony may want to make some improvement.
This would not be announced very far in advance.

Better hi ISO capability would really make it competative, and a
total elimination of "lazy eye problems" would the A100 the
perfect camera for the entry level.... I am not sure what they
can do to improve focusing speed, but that would be the only
other deficiency the camera really has that seems to be making
me and many others hesitant to make the plunge.

If Sony addresses those issues, I would bet that sales would
be much better, because almost every reviewer had an issue
with focus speed compared to Nikon... it was said in the same
breath as the accolades for the camera. Pics taken at ISOs
under 400 or 800 all seem to be second to nobody.

Re: Sony Alpha Price drop again

Prices in UK Sony centres have gone up again from their lowest point. That tends to suggest that SC shoppers are less price conscious than the rest . Of course I don't know whether they are actually selling any at the higher price.

The SC dealers are independent so they are not doing it to make other shop prices appear to be a bargain - they just have a different type of loyal customer who likes the carpets etc.

Re: Sony Alpha Price drop again

Better High ISO wouldn't change sales any noticeable amount.

The bulk of buyers for A100 class cameras have never read a review, they don't know what ISO is. They bought if over others base on Price, Features, MP, looks, feel in a store.

If Sony revamped it with 14MP even at the cost of more noise, sales would go through the roof.

A fair point, but that assumes that these are issues to the average buyer? Are they?

How well is the A-100 selling? Does it have bad press?

Every camera has its issues.......the 400XTi is a good price, has very good AF, some have metering issues, its very plastic, smallest viewfinder out there almost, a weak kit lens.

My point is the 400 has weak spots..that dont seem to be damaging sales..

Is the D40 at its lower price point hurting both?

I have no idea........

Well, in Hungary its not...at least not at the Media Markt (German retail branch) in Szolnok.

Right before I got the Sony I looked at the canon and nikon...both were over 200k forint.
my sony was a good $150 less - if not more.

The canon 350 was the exact same price as the sony, and as I said in other forums, I took advantage of this and jumped on it - as in Budapest the lowest price for the sony was around 200k forint. (doesnt matter currency conversion really in this illustration.)

Peace

Re: I share your view

Coming from the same region South East Asia, I think Sony price is a bit too high. Seems that it is because Sony is viewed as a premium brand. Just got back from Singapore last month and the body only price is still the same as when it first launch almost 10 months ago.
