I'm such a klutz

Just got it x-rayed. They asked if I was a snowboarder. Ha.

Not sure what the results are yet. I guess I need to purchase myself a really nifty custom ankle brace. It's good to hear from someone that has been there / done that. I bet your injuries were far more serious though - I was simply hiking a trail, not playing soccer.

I sprained it really bad in basketball about 10 years ago.. and then again about 9 year ago. It had been hurting lately with all the walking I've been doing - I guess that is remnants of the first / second injury.

Now it's injured a third time - not as young as I was 10 years ago - might take a while to heal. :)

Glad it's Friday. Couldn't miss work this week - was miserable. Now I can prop it up and watch TV all weekend long. And the doc gave me some awesome pain killers. Space-out time!! Wooooo!

I'm thinking I might go shoot a 300 mega-pixel pano of san francisco and spend the weekend stitching. :)

P.S. I'm going to be really mad if the xrays show nothing. They aren't cheap - I could get some really nice glass for the amount of money I've spent on this injury!! :)

You injured it pretty bad. Mine looked exactly like yours all 3 times. Normally the x-rays will only show if you also fractured any bone or if the tear was bad enough to allow the bones that make up the joint to be out of proper alignment. In order to get the ligaments to really show up, they have to shoot you up with a radioactive dye which takes several hours to circulate enought to make the ligaments show up on film really well. The cool (well, sorta cool) thing is that later when you body expels the dye through your bladder, it comes out very flourescent! :-)

Once the swelling goes down and the ligaments are healed 3 months later, good physical therapy is really needed to get you back to a state where you are not likely to reinjure yourself easily. You can likely ask your physician what types of stretching and exercises you can do to help prevent easy reinjury. Mine consisted of various stretches and exercising of the leg, lower leg, ankle and foot. I still try to do them today. One really beneficial exercise consists of a small piece of 3/4" plywood about 6" by 12" with a wooden dresser drawer knob through the exact middle. I would put the thing in the middle of a doorway with the knob side down. I would wear shoes and one foot at a time stand in the middle with the 12" side running the same way as your shoe. You then put all weight on the shoe that is on the wood. While holding onto the door frame for support, you gently rock this board back and forth (left and right). This exercises the muscles that control the ankle. Oh, and before you do this exercise, you should stretch your calf muscles and gently stretch your ankles on the outside by gently putting pressure on the outside of your foot on the floor. Sort of like a controled rolling of the ankle.

Hope this helps. Just keep in mind that this takes 3+ months to heal and about 6 months to a year for all the bruising and tenderness to completely go away. Don't rush it!

As I become older, I'm starting to realize how valuable "patience" is. I've always been impatient. It's taking some adjustment. :)

Thanks for the suggestion for the exercises. Great stuff. I have this bookmarked and will print when I am near a printer.

The xrays were awful. They tested for stress fractures in the ankle, which meant they had to stretch it apart (hold shin straight and rotate ankle sideways to be flush with table). Talk about pain. They didn't even give me a stick to bite on!!

Hopefully, like you though, 3 times is a charm. :)

What really stinks though - it's warming up a bit in SF, the rainy season is over, and I want to really get out and explore. I also had set a personal goal to hike Pike's Peak (Colorado) in October. I bet I can still do it.

Had it casted today, per doctor's recommendation. Had an MRI.

Complete tear of the anterior talofibular ligament. Severe sprain of the calcaneofibular ligament. Lots of bone bruising as well (talus and fibula).

Also, rolled it outwards AND inwards. Moderate sprain of the deltoid ligament.

I have been walking on it for a month. I am awesome. I have learned pain tolerance beyond anything I thought possible.

Casted now - non-weight bearing for a month. This blows.

That was a pretty nasty sprain. Seems like you got beeter medical attention than I did when I played high school baseball. My anke looked just like yours... I tought I broke my leg. I heard 2-3 pops and my leg went numb.

I went to the hospital, but they just gave me crutches.

The worst is if you were to roll it again while it's healing. That is twice as painful as when you first do it.

Glad to see that you finally went to the dr.

Take care,

yeah, I wrecked it a couple times in high school as well. First time they had to cut my shoe off at the hospital because it was so bad. Back then though, I was very althletic. I would use crutches for a couple days and be back on the court within a couple weeks. Sprained it again the next year. Used crutches for a couple days and would drink a lot of beer for the pain. :)

Now, 12 years later - BAM. Having to be a responsible adult while being injured stinks. Plus, it's start of summer out here in SF - I would like to be out and about shooting.

I did get myself a macro lens though. Guess I'll learn macro.

looks like you are recovering by the day, and hopefully there is progress made. seems like you went through a lot of pain regardless.

hope you feel better soon and will be back on your feet without support real fast!

Did you at least use your D200 for those shots?...I know I'm new here, but exactly what did that have to do with photography?

Ouch. I sympathize. It sounds a lot like what my wife goes through from time to time.

The latest, about two months ago, Super Nurse (tm) gets her foot caught in some oxygen tubing, falls, and hurts her wrist. She says it's just sprained. I practically had to drag her kicking and screaming to the clinic. The x-ray showed a clean fractured radius, so it's in a brace for a week so the swelling can go down, a cast for 3 weeks, another cast for three more weeks, and she just started her physical therapy two days ago.

A few years ago, Super Nurse (tm) was taking parachute jumping lessons. She had a severe sprain (a laundry list of ligaments like yours) during the jump and roll part of the training. Grits her teeth and continues through the training. By the end of the all-day class, the wind has picked up and the students aren't going to jump. The jump is rescheduled a week later. So my angel decides she's going to "hide" her injury from the whole world (except me) for a week, bandages it up tightly, ices it frequently, and wears tight, stiff boots to help her walk. A week later, she actually makes the jump (and was happy as a clam, you should have seen her) and then goes right in to have it taken care of. At least they put her in a walking cast...

Another time, we were on vacation, she fell asleep in a chair with her legs crossed, got up with a numb foot, and promptly twisted her ankle into another severe sprain. Continued to hobble around Quebec city, New York, and New Jersey for five more days on it, waited till after I drove us home before seeking medical attention.

I hope you're at least in a bit less pain. Get a walker. It's not dignified, but with a little ingenuity, you can attach a monopod and go shoot some pictures.

Normally, a signature this small can't open its own jumpgate.

Ciao! Joe

Just looking at the pics before reading it all I thought maybe you dropped the D200 plus 70-200 VR on your foot.
