When ours was working we used a 4GB card with no problems at all, just make sure its a nice speedy one esp if shooting raw

8 Gigabytes should do it..

8Gb is also what Sandisk suggested but the confirmation from personal experience is very useful. Thankyou for the help

8GB is the largest size you can format in camera [a 12GB card would be formatted as 8GB in the camera].

I thought the FAT32 limit was higher than that? Aren't there 16GB cards out?

I am using an 8Gb noname

I have been using a no name (really no name, I had to write 8Gb in handwriting on it with a marker to tell it apart CF with 8Gb for quite a while without any problems. No idea how fast it is, I very rarely shoot long sequences so was never confronted with the issue.

The only thing to keep in mind is that the card will hold more than 2500 shots in max resolution (not raw) and the counter only goes up to 999, so at the beginning you never know at a glance how many shots you have left. You can only deduce it from the replay.

The FAT32 limit is higher, but the camera can't format large filesystems. The camera apparently can USE the larger cards if they're already formatted, but it can't format over 8GB.

A similar limitation reportedly afflicts Windows 2000 and Windows XP, which can only format up to 32GB.

There are, but they can't be formatted in Canon DSLRs except for the later 1-series (mark II and mark III). And the mark II's need a firmware update to format the big cards.

As others have noted, if you format a 16GB card in any other Canon DSLR, it will give you an 8GB partition and the other 8GB will be left unusable. To recover the space, you have to repartition the card. Repartitioning apparently runs afoul of some tool limitations so it isn't as easy as it should be, especially with a Mac, but I haven't tried it myself.

Re: Maximum size CF card with 350d

I doubt the camera would be able to use 2 partitions sucessfully anyway, so not much reason to worry if the computer can't format it.

The idea is to have the computer repartition and format one big partition. The camera apparently can use that okay (at least, I haven't heard any complaints).

Re: Maximum size CF card with 350d

It bothers me a whole lot when people slam posts, so please don't take this the wrong way; but I would just ask why you're asking? While there are a lot of good reasons to have the biggest card possible, there are just as many reasons to aim a little lower...

...just food for thought!

The 32GB partition limit in XP and 2000 was deliberate though because MS wanted to force people into using NTFS
