The 30D is revived

Best Buy recently "C" discontinued their shipment of the 30D plus 18-55mm kit lens for $1499.

They've replenished their new shipment with the 30D body and 28-135mm IS lens for the same, yes SAME, price. Along with the 5D with the 24-105mm IS L lens for $4K plus.

Funny huh?

Very strage lens selection

That's like having a 35mm equivalent of 45-215mm. You basically have no wide angle at all.

Here is what I find interesting...

Yes, I saw and/or verified this combo at my local Best Buy... but what I really find interesting...

At B&H, they do not have this kit. B&H has a kit with the 30D with a 28-105mm f3.5-4.5 USM II and are currently asking $1499 for it. But then they also still stock the older kit with 18-55mm and another with 18-85 IS, and also a body only... You can actually buy($1089) the body only and the 28-105mm($218) separately for less then the price they are asking for the kit...

Further... If you buy the body only and the 28-135mm IS ($409) then the Best Buy price for the kit with this lens, is priced pretty much exactly what it would cost to buy the body and lens separately at B&H....

I wonder... is B&H not being offered this new 28-135mm IS kit? and also I wonder if the kit B&H has with the 28-105mm lens, shouldn't really be offered at a much lower price....

It's also somewhat odd that Best Buy has yet to offer this kit on-line...

Something about this is odd... besides the fact that I find what Canon is doing here to be really lame... That is, I think that Canon is showing signs of desperation by offering these rather odd kit's... (at least the 30D kits with 28-whatever lenses are strange).

But is that a Canon kit or a Best Buy kit. I expect the latter. I think Canon only considered the 18-55 or the 17-85 IS lenses kit lenses.

new Canon kits

Canon just introduced a bunch of kits ie camera with lens or lenses. I think the price difference between buying separately and as a kit is minimal.

I think

that the 28-135 IS is not selling so well anymore. They are practically giving them away in the kits, and it´s not really suited as a standard zoom on a crop camera. Maybe it´s the end of the 28-135 IS.

Not Canon kits?

I looked at the Canon NL pricelist and one shop [foto Konijnenberg] and all the kits they have for the 30D are with the lenses you would expect [10-22, 17-85, 18-55], with only one a bit special [100/2.8 with or w/o ringflash]

The only way you get a 28-105 [did not know it was still available] is in a kit with a 30V, which is a film camera

So I think it is probably a move by those resellers

Re: The 30D is revived

Amazon.com also has the 28-135mm IS kit for the same price as Best Buy.

Oh, and it's not a Best Buy-only combo because the box clearly states 28-135mm USM IS kit -- i'm sure it has no affiliation with Best Buy.

All, in all, I think that that's the range I use the most though. For me, since people photography is my fort, 28-135 is my working range--especially with the 1.6x crop factor--(however the 17mm range is sometimes needed for tight indoor group shots) .

But, the MTF resolution charts for that lens doesn't look so good as well. It is an old lens design and not optimized for digital sensors. I think for 400 bucks, I'd take the Tarmon 17-50mm f2.8.

Re: The 30D is revived

Well, you have to use one to really know about it. I got mine when I got my D30 several years ago. It was a wonderful lens on it, though disappointing on the 10D, probably had focusing problems on that camera. All the others have fared well with it. I would say it is about as perfect a lens on my 5D and you could possibly hope for. The IS works wonderfully and the range and quickness of focus are second to none. If you can get a deal on that lens do it. You won't be disappointed. It is sharp at all lens openings, has very little distortion at the wide end, no flare, no chromatic aberrations. It is a much better lens than the 17-85 IS lens, and costs a lot less.

Re: I think

I'm suppose that most people who have money for a full-frame camera would probably want to spend a little more and get a lens like the 24-105 L IS to go with it. And the people buying a 1.6 crop camera want something wider.

Everything I've read about the 28-135 makes it sound like a pretty good lens. It's just become more of a niche lens now.

Is there any discussion on the Canon 40D at the show? Do you think there will be a next generation to the 30D?

Where is the Canon 40D?

Is Canon going to announce the 40D next generation to the 30D?

Getting rid of poor selling lenses with the poor selling 30D

30D not selling. Bundle it with the lenses that aren't selling and offer the combo cheap to get rid of stock.

Cynical imho.

Lots of noobs will be disappointed that their great deal on the latest gear turned out to be a 3yo 20D with a new badge LCD and firmware update, that's about to be superceded. And that their lens is inappropriate for the body they bought and is not highly prized by anyone.

Tried both the 28-105 and the 28-135 IS. Neither is adequate and esp not on a 1.6x crop.

Just my 0.02.

Better lens than before, though

The 28-135 may not be the best lens, but it is several miles better than the one they used to bundle with the camera. Much larger, though.

Guess I'm looking at the 5D now for sure.

You need to do a forum search

if you think the 28-135 IS lens is "not prized by anyone." There have been dozens of threads celebrating its extreme quality and value. I've used mine with five different EOS digitals. It is among the best lenses I've owned. I prize it even more now that I have a 5D but for everything but super wide it was just fine on crop cameras too, especially in low light where the IS really saves the day - evening.

Yeah but...

There are dozens of threads celebrating the perceived quality & value of superzooms...

Perceptions differ and the more experienced you get the less you like the 28-135!
