Interesting 1DIII Info

Just called Pitman Photo in Miami to try to get on a waitlist. Was told by salesperson that as of this morning, the camera has been deleted from the Canon catalog, and all dealer orders had been canceled. The sales guy said Canon was going to reannounce this before the end of PMA.

Anyone else hear anything on this?

and by "reannounce this," I mean reannounce the body. Figured I'd clarify to avoid any confusion.

Probably Up

It might, which would be fantastic, but I'm guessing that since Nikon didn't announce a D2hs replacement and they basically have no competition, they'll do their best to get max profits from the camera --> price going up. Who knows though...anything can happen.

Re: Probably Up

Canon never released an official MSRP or MAP, so all the labels of $3999 were rumors and unofficial. Canon isn't responsible for resellers making estimations on price. It sucks that it will most likely be $4500, but that was the price of the 1DMKII when it hit the shelves in 2004.

Yen / $$$ Ratio...

The Yen has been gaining in value in the past few weeks. So chances are everything will cost more if you are buying with $$$...

Hope not, but ....

Canon's white paper for the 1DMIII says:

"The retail price of the EOS-1D Mark III at introduction will be $3,999, the same price at which the EOS-1D Mark II N debuted. Considering all the improvements and meaningful new functions, the new camera is a stunning deal whether it replaces or adds to existing equipment, or represents the beginning of a great new adventure."

Re: Probably Up

Interesting. I didn't think the whitepapers would hold price points. There was a phone interview with Chuck Westfall and he refused to answer the question of "how much" and only answered "we will have a price when it gets closer to time of release." That is very contradictory on Canon's part, not good.

Re: Listed at Canoga Camera

Canon has not shot themselves in the foot. No matter what the price is, $3999 or $4499 USD, there will plenty of people lining up with cash in hand to pay whatever the price of admission is for the MkIII. For people who actually make a living off their cameras, the extra $500 won't make any difference, especially since they have to have it to compete with the other professionals who will be using it. And for those who have more money than anything else (take that any way you like it), they'll gladly pay whatever ot tales to be the first on their block to own one. For the rest of us, we'll either wait for the price to drop (which it will), or we'll get a bargain used MkII from those who upgraded.

Canon is very smart. After all, they are in the business to make a profit. And, it's not like they have any competition for the MkII (let alone the MkIII).

I think Canon just shot themselves in the foot.

Interesting interview with Chuck Westfall on the 1dmkIII.

He quotes a price for the new 16-35 and the wireless transmitter but not the camera itself.

I think it was a mistake on Canon's part to commit in this way. I don't remember the 1DMKII holding the MSRP in its whitesheet.
Nice lens in your signature by the way, I'm jealous.
