Re: new Sigma 200-500 f/2.8 EX DG

Hi all there

just a consideration about that monster...

I guess it wouldn't be able to leave Japan...

1) Just imagine a photographer carrying it in his hand luggage (or even not, I guess such thing should weights at least 10-15kg itself.. ) He can't take with him anything else..

2) Second: Just imagine a sport event like your local superbowl or so.. I think the security wouldn't leave enter you.. they would call the anti-terrorism special forces to check it...

No HSM, no stabilization.. but what kind of use could it have? Maybe "dirty works" for secret services???

Definitely not my taste. This could just be a flop.. At least, the ones often wondering about some super-mega-lens could be now sent here to give a look for another "no-real-need-lens".

All the best.

Reason for HSM delay...

They were gonna release the HSM but it didn't pass green laws. They have to change the engine from two-stroke to four-stroke (I heard their also working on OHV-Over Head Valve version).

Re: think I will buy one

I need something to stand out in the crowd. People 'ooh and awe' when they see the 500mm f/4... imagine the looks when I roll this baby around on its titanium robo-pod!

Lots of good uses....

you are joking, I can think of a hundred great uses for this!

Here are a few to give you an idea....

1. Put in the boot of my car to get better traction when the weather is wet.

2. In the house as a door stop - no wind will move that beast!

3. To light my cigarettes when I am caught out without matches

Re: That'll put you on Homeland Security's watch list!

That monster will scare the neighbors and attract the attention of security personnel wherever you use it!

Might be fun to use for photographing whales from the shore! You wouldn't have to charter a boat or anything.

Size of the front element???

What's the formula to calculate the size of the front element? i'm curious.

i know it has drop-in filters, but just wondering how big that front element is...

Re: Size of the front element???

Hi Plimkon,

no formulas, for me: assuming the camera mounted on its back is the new SD14, which is 107mm tall, I guess the front lens should be from 25 to 30 cm (250 to 300mm) wide. Then, I'd estimate a 10-15 kg (25-35 lbs) weight and above all a price much higher than the new D3.. That is, since here 600mm F4 is about 13k$, I guess it would fly up to around 15-18 k$.

Quite a pity not having a motor and inner stabilizer.. but I guess Sigma probably could implement on the camera body.. I think that lens will be a batteries hog, needing to move all that glass back and forth.
Just imho.

Re: Size of the front element???

oh...i think i found my answer...focal length / max f-stop is the minimum diameter (in mm) needed. the front element could be larger.

so in this case, that front element is at least 178.57mm.

crazy...

front element

My guess is between 170 and 178.5mm.
