I think the rear portion of the lens rotates.

So the majority of the barrel (where the handle is) does not rotate but the rear portion does. This picture shows a knob that could be for that.

this thing HAS to have HSM, how can you expect it to focus with the
screw-drive focus from the camera body, otherwise it whould only
work on the D2X/H, what do you think? You would strip your poor
D50/70(s) 80/200 's autofocus motor if it had to focus this lens??
But then agian, if you view the photo of the lens where you can see
the mount it looks like it has a screw-drive focus coupling, i
dunno, just guessing

Not only that, it probably has its own battery pack to run the AF motors.

more like $10k

the 300-800 5.6 is already at $8k. However, I hope you're right though. But I won't touch it if it doesn't have HSM.

where is the zoom ring?

I could not see it. Doesn't look like it has HSM either...

Re: where is the zoom ring?

Doesn't Sigma have some lens that has it's own internal focus motor, but isn't HSM? I think the 80-400 was like that...I figure this would would at least be like that as well.

Granted, it might be designed so that only a selection of middle elements move, so you don't need the torque of a 69 Camaro electric starter to turn the dern thing.

This is by far..

my favorite PMA announcement this year! I wonder if the digital readout requires it's own power source (watch battery?) or leaches of the camera's power. Perhaps it should come with it's own tripod also.. I think my Gitzo 1200 series would crumble like a biscuit..

I look forward to seeing initial tests!

P.s.

I think it should be called "Sigma EOV" short for the "EYE OF VOLTRON"

I do have to hand it to Sigma on the super-duper-teles. I've seen some really great pics from their 800mm. -Greg-

One of the best threads I've read in a while... completely hilarious! LOL

Forget mounting wheels on it, forget mounting it on your roof rack, heck forget hooking this baby to even the beefiest tripod... you'll need your own dedicated crane to get mobile with this cannon!

Geez... I would love to see it in action! LMAO!!!

Re: new Sigma 200-500 f/2.8 EX DG

It also creates a new form of distortion. Light that comes too close to the lens but does not pass through it is bent, thus the black color of its body. Thus, SD for singularity distortion!

And does it have VR? :-/
