Question ...

... could you give a rough outline of how to perform an ASCII dump of the firmware?

I'm always amazed by your deep knowledge of the camera and manufacture technology.

Re: Question ...

ASCII dump is an old saying from my Unix day.

Today all you need to do is to open the firmware file with Windows Notepad program, and just search for "copyright" string.

Re: Nikon's PMA DSLR announcement

Is it possible that this is not a replacement of D40 but a new model between the D40 and the D80? (e.g. D55?)

Same here in Sweden

the world?

I'd bet the trend is same worldwide, i.e. Nikon is gaining market
share in the past few month and the main reason is the product
lineup: D40 (price sells), D80 (package sells) and D200 (feature
sells).

Nikon is now number one in the DSLR market here.

Comparing to Canon, its entry level 400D is priced higher than D40,
thus ends up losing its #1 position. The 30D is surrounded by D80
and D200, both having more pixel and features. While in the higher
end 5D is FF but it's priced beyond what the mass can afford.

Agree....

The picture quality is stunning, the dynamic range is first rate
and very agreeable ISO up to 1600. In fact, this model takes better
pictures than my D200 does at higher ISO's. I'm just afraid that by
replacing the chip with a 10MP one, the diffractions limitations
take place and we lose that extraordinary ISO 1600 capability,
which in the D40 retains excellent color saturation.

Re: Nikon's PMA DSLR announcement

Thanks Jeff(c) all your information seems bang on in the past and this time I don't see any difference. Its probably is a good move for Nikon to have two entry level cameras on the market to be user base up, however hopefully with this new announcement we will see:-

Original D40 (6mp) + kit lens to tumble to sub £300

New D40x (10 mp) + kit lens to be priced below Sony alpha, D80, sub £400 include wireless supportt, in-built AF motor.

Some new Nikon pro primes & short primes updated to AFS & VR - however we probably see another 18-?, which I would mind if it is like 18-120 F4 AFS VR

I really wish Nikon would announce the D3h (if it exists) & air it at the same time as Canon's 1d Mk 3 sports/fast pro camera to counter act/Steal the thunder from Canon.

All they say is that "there will be no dSLR TODAY". So no matter that they didn't have a dslr to show right then, it might very well show up at PMA.

Something like a good 18-120 F4 AF-S VR, positioned between the kitlenses (18-70, 18-135) and the 'professional' 17-55 F2.8, would be my choice too! For now, there is not much more in that segment than the 18-200 AF-S VR. Does that sound right?

Re: Nikon's PMA DSLR announcement

Whether it replaces or sits alongside the current spec D40, I don't understand the attitude that this has any affect on those who have bought the D40. (In the same way I don't understand why some D50 owners were so angry that the D40 wasn't a direct upgrade)

In both situations these people looked at the market, saw what models were available at what price, decided that they liked the trade-off between features and price and bought the model they thought most suited them. And, for the most part, have been happy with the result.

The moment that they walked out of the shop, they stopped being a potential buyer and became a user so, unless they intend to buy another camera tomorrow, it doesn't matter what's on the market or what the price is. Nothing changes the fact that they did their best to buy the model that best suited them at a price they were willing to pay.

Technology moves so quickly as to make any talk of second-hand values moot. So, if you're not concerned about the residual value of your camera, why does it make any difference what the next model to come out is? (Bodies usually last long enough that you would probably be looking at the replacement for your camera's replacement, anyway)

For instance, I bought a D50 at what was then a good price. A month later, it was £50 cheaper. That doesn't undermine the fact that I bought a good camera at a good price. I got what I wanted at a price I considered reasonable, so it's irrelevant what happened next.

If it is a D40s with AF motor I'll laugh until I cry

Considering the howling when the D40 came out without mechanical AF coupling... could it be that Nikon introduces a D40s with it? I will laugh until I cry. Not likely that it happens of course.

Who cares about 10Mp in the D40 anyway, it's only important for the misinformed masses who need bragging rights when they can't explain that their 'professional' Nikon only has 6MP and their horrible cousin's Joe's Sony 12MP. But then again, that's the market for the D40 isn't it, the unformed masses. I still remember a post by a newbie SLR user who bought a Tamron 18-200 so he never had to change lenses on his SLR...

D40 is a low light heavyweight

The Nikon D40 is the best low light digital camera I have used so far. I wish the D200 was as good in low light, but it isn't.

If this rumor is true, I would go out and buy one immediately before they disappear.

I already have mine, what the heck it only cost $600 (US).

Re: Nikon's PMA DSLR announcement

I think its very well possible we could get a D80S or D200s... like what happend with the D70

upgrading the D40 already i find that hard to believe.

just my 2 cents

Re: My money is on the D50s, 10mp...

The D40 is an entry-level camera, not designed to replace the D50. In that light, I would expect to see the D50 come out with the 10mp sensor, and some other enhancement, if anything. Perhaps even a D60 as a replacement to the D50? Like the D80 'replaces' the D70 family?

Just my thoughts - it just doesn't make sense to consider any changes to the D40 or the D80 at the moment....
