Nikon's PMA DSLR announcement

Reliable sources have confirmed there is at least one DSLR announcement in a few days during 2007 PMA.

And yes it's a surprised one like someone suggested a few days ago as an unexpected 's model.

However sources confirmed it's not exactly the traditional 's upgrade, instead it's an 'x upgrade.

It will be a D40x and the major change is the 6mp CCD being replaced by an 10.2mp CCD from the D80/D200.

Let's just wait for a few days we will find out the details.

If this is true D40 is the shortest lifetime for SLR/DSLR in the history.

Re: Nikon's PMA DSLR announcement

Considering the D40 came out less than 3 months ago, that would constitute a rip off.

Come on! How could Lao Niu be so sure about the reliability of such "source"? If true, how come Nikon camera developers were so stupid in bring out a D40 in such a rush? How many D40 kits have been sold and how much profit has come to Nikon before the announcement of "D40x"?

Sources, not source, okay?

As far as reasoning you will need to ask Nikon. My speculation would be Nikon wanted to catch the Christmas shopping season and either the 10mp version is not ready or they have supply issue with Sony for the 10mp chip, or Nikon has bought too many 6mp chips.

Anyway, just wait for a few days we will find out. I am just a messenger.

Imagine if it was true. I would buy it in a heartbeat - a D80/D200 sensor in a D40 body? HECK YEA!

Maybe they will see the error in their way and also add an AF motor in the body!

Sorry couldn't resist

I hope you said it is a D3x.

But a D40x is good too. At least better than nothing.

Thanks

I sure hope not

I'm sure glad I already have the 40 if they are going to replace it with 10mp. I would probably get another before they dry up.

D40 being #1 in Japan in Janurary

Do you also know the D40 is tthe sales champion in Japan in January (last week data), over passing the 400D/Rebel XTi?

http://bcnranking.jp/freepaper/12-00012860.html

And it helps Nikon occupy 49.9% of the DSLR market in Japan, kicking Canon down to 33.1% as #2 since last December.

So why do they upgrade the D40?

I would contribute this as manufacture and supply issue instead of marketing reason. 6mp is sufficient for the market segment but Sony may be EOF'ing the famous 6mp chip and lowering the price of the new 10.2mp chip.

And for most of the consumers, pixel does count.

For me, I will hold on to the 6mp D40 as it has better high ISO performance than the 10.2mp D200 as my own test confirms (in Chinese but the graphs should be readable):

Re: Nikon's PMA DSLR announcement

Jeff-c,

Did your information include any idea if the 'D40x' is to retain the price of the D40, or to be priced higher and perhaps sell alongside the D40?

Re: D40x will they up cost

Whether Nikon is going to bring up the price of D40x to the same level of Canon 400D or not we will find out in a few days.

From CCD chip cost stand point of view I doubt there is any major cost difference between the 6mp and the 10.2mp, as the biggest cost factor is die (chip) size which is same for both of them.

And it could very well be that the 10.2mp chip is even cheaper from Sony because Sony is ramping up the 10.2mp due to more models are using this version instead of the 6mp one.

Please keep the 6MP sensor!

The picture quality is stunning, the dynamic range is first rate and very agreeable ISO up to 1600. In fact, this model takes better pictures than my D200 does at higher ISO's. I'm just afraid that by replacing the chip with a 10MP one, the diffractions limitations take place and we lose that extraordinary ISO 1600 capability, which in the D40 retains excellent color saturation.

If an AF motor was part of the deal it might be interesting, otherwise it is just an extremely quick upgrade to an already successful product, what is the point.

I doubt we're going to see a replacement for the D40. I've heard of a D50s from a nikon tech in India.
