(hacked) RAW support for Powershot A610!

I was browsing through the dcraw history (looking to see when XTi support was added so I could complain to Google for still not supporting the XTi in their latest build of Picasa...) when I noticed something strange--the author's comment for the Nov. 28 build states the following:

Added the Canon PowerShot A610.

So, scratching my head, I went to the dcraw website which refers you to this site:

digicanon.narod.ru

... which contains a program that installs through the firmware update interface (but does not actually update the firmware) that enables the camera to save RAW photos. They're uncompressed, and they're only 10-bit (compared to 12-bit on Canon's DSLRs), but the website mentioned above shows the RAW photos have some clear advantages in terms of preserving colors and details highlights and shadows. Kind of puts the lie to Canon's propaganda about JPG being "good enough" in the G7.

In addition to the A610, there is experimental RAW support for the A620 and S3 IS as well...

russian samples...

though i'd saw the jpegs look better/less washed out on the cat.

can anyone confirm this?

sounds very interesting. surprised no interest in it.

I'll wait for the A640 hack

Hmm.... interesting!

How very interesting! Thanks for the info. Not sure I would want to be the first to try it, but it certainly seems interesting regarding the G7 brouhaha. Even though Canon says the G7 jpegs are good enough, something like this would allow for easy WB correction, and eek out a little more DR. On the other hand, 10 mgpx uncompressed RAW files would be HUGE, which would make one want to use them very sparingly.

Yay for Russian camera hackers! Maybe they can get Canon to relent about dropping RAW, like they got Canon to wake up about severely limiting the 300D in firmware (big change with the 350D). One can only hope!

Great news, everyone!
Although I don't want to be the first to try that out, either

Drat, appears the S3 IS version needs to be compiled first, and I don't happen to have an ARM compiler sitting around...

I will be interested to see if anyone has any luck with this S3IS change. Looks like is has huge potential.

I just wish Canon would give it to us in an official release.

Hello!

added my A610 CameraJPEG vs. RAW vs. RAW+HighlightRecovery samples. Judge for yourself. http://digicanon.narod.ru/compare.htm

I'm confused by the white balance settings. I'm using the S3 hack but can't get my head around the WB stuff. Do you use the custom white balance and if so what do the 4 numbers after the -r mean? have you managed to get the darkframe subtraction to work?

Almost always. Auto-WB is poor. Numbers are channel multipliers (RGB?), but why there are four numbers? Maybe for CYGM-cameras?

Shoot white card in all lighting conditions and use
"dcraw -v -a" output to get WB preset corresponding to lighting conditions.

Flash is always used with other lighting, so it is the hardest case (no preset could be made).

have you managed to get the darkframe subtraction to work?

Yes, but found it useless (on A610). In-camera darkframe subtraction (shutter> =1.3sec) works fine. AFAIK,

dcraw -D -4 -j -t 0 IMG_0001_darkframe.JPG
dcraw -K IMG_0001_darkframe.pgm IMG_0002.JPG

GUI-based raw-converter UFraw ( http://ufraw.sourceforge.net/ recent CVS versions, 0.11 alphas) seem to have support for a610,a620,s3is already; but i can't compile it for windows or linux. Can anybody familiar with linux do that? RAW is almostuseless without good software... 0.11 version scheduled to end of january...

Re: (hacked) RAW support for Powershot A610!

Example presets (for S60 though)
"Daylight" 1.742169, 1, 1.486747, 1
"Cloudy" 1.881437, 1, 1.366467, 1
"Tungsten" 1.144910, 1, 2.566467, 1
"Fluorescent" 1.714650, 1, 2.053503, 1
"Fluorescent high" 2.849655, 1, 2.067586, 1
"Flash only" 2.143229, 1, 1.190104, 1
"Underwater" 2.677109, 1, 1.148193, 1

They are camera-dependent

Hello,

i have been following this thread with great interest. I own a A620 and would like to be able to adjust the sharpnes, contrast and saturation like in the new models A630/640. Knows anybody if there is a firmware-hack for the A610/620 which enables these features? Thanks!

The closest I could come up with was RGBG as the sensor is RGBG

Darkframe subtraction at shorter exposures is useful for removing stuck pixels, I have some pixels that are always white/red etc.

DCraw supports ".badpixels" file (for remapping such bad/hot pixels). It is easier and more convinient than darkframe substraction.

Cool, thanks. What refernces do you have for DCRaw? I find the homepage rather empty on detail.
