G7 Raw

Just thought i'd mention that at our meeting with Canon at Photokina we raised all the points mentioned here about the 'disappointing' spec of the G7. One question we asked in particular was whether the raw option could be implemented via a firmware upgrade, and we have be promised an answer. No breath holding though..

Re: G7 Raw

Great! I hope they do it. There would be a problem in the software support for raw tho, wouldn't it?

Good work, Simon. I hope they answer with something substantial, and not just some typical, void marketing babble.

Re: G7 Raw

Thanks Simon! Good work!

Well, there might be some chance that the RAW will be implemented after all. Though that would be surprising, considering the fact that Canon has been very reluctant to bring any new features with firmware updates.

And no, they wouldn’t even have to support the RAW files themselves, but they probably would.

Whatever, the lack of RAW is only one deficiency of many, so won’t change my overall judgment about “G”7.

I think they will give G7 a tiff instead of raw. Since in theory raw expose all the CCD flaw at 10MP. IMHO.

This my opinion, I do not want you to accept my view, but I humbly ask you to evaluate what I say and judge for yourself, if it make sense.

Re: G7 Raw

Thanks for the update Simon. Glad to hear Canon at least heard it from you guys as well. That particular omission seems glaring since it would have cost them nothing to leave it implemented (as opposed to the swivel screen or faster lens). It would appear they would rather not deal with the customer support for non DSLRs anymore. Perhaps too many questions about RAW from customers who have bought over their heads. Short sighted IMO. Lamentable, but I doubt anything will change. Thanks again for all your hard work!
Best regards,
Mark

Re: G7 Raw

I have some more questions to Canon people:

1. Do they really care what customers think?

2. Why don't they read by themselves what people write in this forum?
No Canon employee cares to read what is written here????

I will not buy G7 because it doesn't have the flip LCD. I'm staying with my A610 for now. I would like to have the x6 with IS but only with flip LCD.

I guess nobody from Canon will read my post also..:)

Well all megapixel race means that they care what people thinks. But different people. Those who don't understand nothing except one simple number (and price .. expensive=good).

I wonder if a firmware update could do anything about the lack of a flip-out LCD screen?

Canon P&S RAW R.I.P.?

My understanding is that the new Canon Media Storage M30 and M80 devices support RAW images from Canon DSLRs only. The devices do not support RAW from Canon P&S cameras that output RAW, even though they do support every Canon DSLR ever made. That, along with the dropping of RAW from all recent and new P&S offerings including the "flagship" G7, strongly suggests to me that Canon has made an across-the-board decision to drop RAW for everything except DSLRs. Pity.

Thank you Simon

The lack of Raw is not the only dissapointment with the new Canon "G" camera.

The real problem here is lack of articulated LCD display, really dissapointing buttons design (you just can not place your thumb on the back side except on the large omni selector or some other buttons), why is necessary this hot shoe (how to hold the camera with mounted external flash?), short battery life (how to shoot 4GB movie if the battery is capable of only 220 shots much less than 1GB ), lower quality lens after adding the 6x zoom, lack of remote control, etc.

When holding the camera at Photokina I also was really surprised that the camera was focussing with very, very long delay in some situations (it could be a problem unit though).

IMHO the A630/A640 with added image stabilization will be much better option than G7.

That would be just about as bad as no raw, a 10mp tiff file would be huge and slow. I couldn't see myself use this option.

I'd be interested in knowing how the Canon people responded to you when you brought these issues up. It's clear that RAW support is about the only item than can be addressed with firmware but what was their response when the lack of a flip out LCD, slow lens omission, etc., were brought up? Did they realize how disappointing the G7 is?

I wonder if the the new Epsons support Raw data from either camera?
Good point you bring up here...

Thanks!

Thanks John & Dpreview for funneling our thoughts to the folks at Canon. I'm still more interested in the G6 than the G7...
