Well, it would be nice rangefinder-like camera.

Pair it with the DA Limited pancakes and it would beat the new Sigma DP1 any time! But I would prefer less futuristic look:-)

I believe we have three threads starting with that image already.
And I say like I have done before, it seems to be a design from the late 90's.
It's dead and buried, that's why Pentax shows it.

Take care

That's right, they won't show anything that's remotely close to what's actually in development. Those samples are just to illustrate the capabilities of the product devopment lab. Hmm, I wonder if anyone has actually produced plug-in lenses for an Optio-sized camera before?

Of course it is dead (or most likely dead) but it will be nice, won't it?:-)

And Phil wrote it is a concept from 1997...

My thoughds exactly.

If it takes pancake lenses, has K110 electronics and has a large non reflective hires electronic screen-viewfinder on the back, i would seriously consider it as a backpacking camera.

I see Pentax is placing ads in backpacking magazines targeting adventure enthusiasts. This concept from the past actually fits the profile better than K100...

Interesting. I am sure backpackers would appreciate a weatherproof body of a smaller form factor than the K10D - oh, and AA batteries...

This mock-up may be dead, but I hope that Pentax has not buried the idea together with the mock-up.

That would be a great camera ... maybe SR, and a rotating LCD but that may be asking to much

well, I think it's pretty dang ugly, and like you'd want to have the AE lock on the front of the camera!

Seems very close to where my left thumb would be...

I like the concept. I guess similar to the Lecia Digilux / Pana LC1.
Have to be pocketable - I would buy one.

Not that camera but

What I would want to see is a camera with the K mount, made really compact - perhaps accept LCD viewfinder only, but with a "focusing prism" image - and with a grayscale sensor. No Bayer matrix, just black and white. Perhaps also have the IR filter be swappable for those wanting to do real IR.

You'd get quite a lot better light sensitivity (three times, more or less), and somewhat better detail since you don't need to interpolate over every pixel group. You should also be able to control noise more effectively.

If you design it specifically for the three pancakes, you could skip LCD live preview and have an ordinary see-through analog viewfinder switchable between 21, 40 and 70mm (or just viewfinder lines for those distances), together with a focus confirmation light for the center point.

Make it minimalistic, make it black and white and make it small. Anybody doing street photography will love it.

Also make it water resistant and easily IR capable and you'd have eternal gratefulness from people using cameras for astronomy and documentation.

Re: Not that camera but

Hi Jan!

Very nice ideas, I'd be a potential buyer.

I think cameras like that will come, but only when the market is saturated. When speed and resolution are "more than enough for anybody" in a certain price range, the manufacturers will look for other features they can get our money for!

Cheers
