Re: Lots o' pics

Dang, amazing pics.

Thanks!

Seeing photos like these make me want to sell all my gear and get
the 5D. Aah, to be able to use the 50/1.4 as it was meant to be...

The 5D Rocks!

With my skills, I just can't get moments like those fast enough
with my Pentax film camera and the manual focus 50/1.4. Oh how
dearly I miss autofocus during those critical moments!

Yeah -- good AF is a must. Either that or simply amazing skill with MF.

Again, thanks for sharing those wonderful pictures. They really got
my heart pumping for photography and beautiful images.

Glad to please. : )

Re: Lots o' pics

As always, I really enjoy seeing your pictures. If I may ask... why
would you get the 50mm f/1.2L considering you're able to get such
pictures with the f/1.4? I'm not debating the issue, but I just
happen to respect your opinions in this forum, and want to hear a
rational reason.

As I said in my reply to Chez Wimpy below, it's consistency. I get great shots at f / 1.4, but they're not easy. Maybe a 30-50% keeper rate as opposed to 90% for the 100 / 2 at f / 2.

Hopefully, that sounds "rational" enough. : )

I understand... I've gotten to the point where I use the 50mm f/1.4 at f/2.5 and above and only go below that if I have to. My 300D doesn't really let me play with the ISO like a 5D--far too noisy. I had the 100 f/2 briefly and didn't play much, but I traded it in for the 135mm f/2L and know what you mean by consistency.

If I switch to a 5D the 50mm would be my most useful focal length (currently it's the 28mm with the crop factor) so I'd love to have a great lens. We'll see how the pricing of the 50mmL turns out after a few months. Thanks again for your input.

tips/tricks?

Hey Joe, you obviously have mastered the 50mm 1.4 and gotten to know its quirks. Amazing photographs... quit making me have 5d envy, those iso 3200 shots are amazing, but not as amazing as your eye for composition with that little girl. Do you have any tips/tricks for future users of the 50mm 1.4?

Thanks!

Here is one I took over the weekend at the Aquarium of the Pacific in Long Beach, CA. I used a Rebel XTi and the 50mm.

The only thing I'm a master of is my own domain, if you get my obsure allusion. : )

The only tip/trick I can offer succinctly is to take lots of pics. The more you take, the better chance of getting a keeper. There's a lot more, of course, but that answer is several pages long, maybe even a book. : )

Thanks!

No prob.

Fortunately for me, when I ETS'd from the Army, that was the end of it. : )

If I may add...

I understand... I've gotten to the point where I use the 50mm f/1.4
at f/2.5 and above and only go below that if I have to. My 300D
doesn't really let me play with the ISO like a 5D--far too noisy.

...the AF on the 300D bites. At least it did on mine. When I went from the 300D to the 20D, my "skills" suddenly improved overnight.

I had the 100 f/2 briefly and didn't play much, but I traded it in
for the 135mm f/2L and know what you mean by consistency.

Funny -- the 100 / 2 is the best performing lens I have. So good, in fact, that I sold my 135 / 2L to fund the 150 / 2.8 macro.

If I switch to a 5D the 50mm would be my most useful focal length
(currently it's the 28mm with the crop factor) so I'd love to have
a great lens. We'll see how the pricing of the 50mmL turns out
after a few months. Thanks again for your input.

The 20D + 35 / 1.4L was my #1 combo followed by the 85 / 1.8. The 5D + 100 / 2 is my new #1. Soon, however, it will be the 5D + 50 / 1.2L followed by the 100 / 2.

Re: tips/tricks?

Joe Mama,

Thanks for posting those pics.... you make the comment " perhaps even a book "

Honestly I am the first to deride silly photographs or to kick into touch the elaborate efforts at capturing things of little value , however as one of the rare times on DP I see in your pics of that child the real chance of capturing the magic of childhood.

PLEASE continue .... take a few years .... illuminate the magic mystery of youth and the fantasy of the mundane. Your ability is obvious and possibly at its best when not trying to do anything more than play and enjoy.

At some time in the future when my grey exceeds to white, I would love to see this book ..... page after page of the everyday moments like that kid in freefall on route to the couch.

thejaybird ,

Stunning black and white photos. Amazing tones. Care to share on your PP technique?

BTW, I've been waiting for the new EF 50mm f/1.2L USM for six months now and for USD 1600 it better be sharp at f/1.2.
