D60 - not rumor!!!

Hi All,

First, Happy New Year to all here at Dpreview. Also to Phil for being such a great host.

Here is the info I got. First, there is NO spec's or time schedule on it's release. Got it? To those that are salivating instead of reading, no info was given from Canon on it's features or release schedule. So, you want to know what the big deal is. Here it is . . .

One of the pro's I learn from and take classes and lessons from was hired to demonstrate THE REPLACEMENT FOR THE D30 at the February show. He is a big name guy.

So, that means there IS a camera - and Canon is calling it a REPLACEMENT FOR THE D30!!!!! It is in real life and not a fantisy. He was not told any info like mp size or when it will be available. I guess they want a high end person to place the camera with.

THE D30 REPLACEMENT - YES!!!!!!! What neat NEAT words.

That's all.

Re: D60 - not rumor!!!

Well of course the D30 will be replaced, everything is, the question is when, how is it improved and what is the price differential.

Most recently "improved" cameras have been marginal improvements unless you are going up to a completely different price level.

Re: D60 - not rumor!!!

For the nice guys:

The important message here is Canon has hired a top top pro to demonstrate the D60. Yes, they called it a D60. The person they hired is my teacher in pro photography. The important thing here is there IS something to demonstrate, AND it will be in February. Of course, they did not take him into their confidence and spill all. What is nailed down here is the time table which will be in February. He has posted it publically. This isn't a private message. It is a public declaration, it is NOT a rumor.

Yeah, but...

Well, call me skeptical... But if Canon improved upon the D30, I don't think they'd call it a D60. The better the camera, the LOWER the number I would think, just like the film-based cameras.

Unless this is an internal name or temporary one... It could imply a 6MP sensor...

Who knows.

I would agree with that. It is probably a temporary name or possibly what Canon internal people are calling it. Some of the other stuff I heard in the conversation over this is that Epson will have some new stuff to "knock your socks off". We will see, the stuff they have is pretty good now. Also, Fuji has committed to introducing their S2. To me, the big news is the D60 though, and it is going to be demonstrated by someone I know personally! So cool.

Re: D60 - not rumor!!!

I guess I'm going to skip the D60 , first of all because I'm more than happy with the results I get from the D30 , secondly , if this camera is an improved D30 the price willl be in line with the D30 when it came to market or even higher which will not be something I'm willing to spend.

Digital EOS cameras to me are not much different than Film EOS cameras in the way that they are not wanna haves but serious quality instruments meant to last for a considerable period.

I can wait another 2-3 years ( got my D30 3 weeks ago ) and wait for the 10-12 MP EOS camera when it's on the market for a year or so and prices drop.

It's good to read that the next generation is on it's way but it's not going to be for me.

Regards and happy new year,
Frans

Re: Yeah, but...

Peter,

Yours is the first post I give any credence to. I have read many of your posts in the past and have found them to be fairly level-headed and even-tempered. (Not something common to all postings).

Regarding this new camera, what was posted where?

If it is, as I surmise, an upgraded D30, then I doubt it would have a higher pixel count than the current 1D, as this would be very confusing to the market. Best chance is for a 4 mpixel CMOS with improved auto-focus.

If this is so, it will probably come out at about the price of the original D30, and take a year to come down in price. Since I have just begun to wring out the D30 and learn all it can do, I would surmise that this new camera is primarily for those who have reached the limits of the auto-focus, and those who have not yet bought in.

What I want is probably still on the horizon - 6mpixel+ with excellent auto-focus. Speed is not as important, as long as it can flush the buffer quickly and not make me wait at a bad moment.

If this is being shown in February, expect initial trickles in June, volume in August, and prices to begin to drop the following year. At that point we may see the camera that I want.

In the meantime, I am investing my dollars into lenses. Just got the 16-35mm and it is AMAZING! Thinking about the 28-70L to replace my 24-85. More interested in any new lenses coming out in February.

Also, where is this introduction to be made? Perhaps I should go to this event and check it out.

Thanks

The following is a verbatim copy of Mr. MacLean's message, to which you haven't yet replied. Surely, since it's a public declaration, there must be some public place in which it was declared...

Re: D60 - not rumor!!!

I agree with ya Frans. I am gonna wait for the 10mp full frame baby in R&D as we speak, which will likely be announced about this time next year. At least from what the dealer/rep said it "should" also have the 1D's AF and AE exposure chip on board as well. No word as to whether or not it will have the magnesium body, but frankly that would NOT be a deal breaker for me. The auto focus WOULD. I am content to get my complete L lens collection under control by Spring, and then wait to save up enough to be ready for this awesome camera this time next year.

Not rumor???

Rumor (roo'mer)
1.) General talk not based on definite knowledge; mere gossip, hearsay.
2.) An unconfirmed report, story or statement in general circulation.

That's how Webster defines it. How do you define it?

Lamest thread ever. John

This corroborates what a Canon Rep told me in September. I think there are enough reports of it so far that some credibility has to be given to it. But be careful... some people will bite your head off for this.

Hi Peter,

logically there will be an upgrade similar the development from G1 to G2: the D30 will experience higher 4mp... and hopefully CMOS sensor.

I'm ready for it.

Actually, I don't see anything particularly wrong with this. The guy is just passing on what he heard, with qualifications as to where and under what parameters he heard it. It doesn't really "confirm" anything, but it's interesting to read.

Even if we knew it to be absolute fact (that is, that Canon is showing a D30 replacement in February) would that be so far from what many of us suspect? I mean, we've pretty much thought that was the timetable all along. And, as another has pointed out here, it doesn't really mean anything in the way of purchase -- we're still looking at the end of summer '02 before any cameras will be available for mortals (and a good many months more before they'll be as affordable as the D30, if ever).

So everyone should just relax -- this isn't an obnoxious thread as the one about jimwww who sold his D30 (who seems like a blithering idiot -- if I knew as little as he obviously did before I spent thousands of dollars I'd deserve a quick punch in the head with a 2x4).--Mike http://www.kelleytown.com

Re: D60 - not rumor!!!

Here is the dilema I am faced with. A lot of you are real nice guys and we can argue, banter and learn from each other. On the other hand, a lot of folks here can be rude, obnoxious and demanding. I am not saying who is who because I don't want to offend - especially on New Years!

For the reasons that I said, and the site I am referring to is where I learn and take lessons, I don't want to give the site to have brutes go over there in full force. I don't think it would be right for me to do that out of respect to the folks over there. There are some folks who frequent it that are here too by the way. I notice that they too refrain from directing folks there. This site (Dpreview) can generate a LOT of bandwidth, plus some of the hostilities that go with it.

Now, if I were in your shoes I know I would want to know where the h*ll it is, so here is my solution:)

First, I will put the interaction below so you can read it for yourself. Second, you can pick somebody you trust besides me and I will let them verify it for you.

Remember what I posted originally, so things can stay straight and not get distorted. I am in the same boat as you and want information too. The info so far is: Canon has hired my teacher or professional "coach" to be one of the 2 people who will demonstrate the "D60" at the PMA show. The show will be in Feb in Orlando Florida. This guy is a very HIGHLY respected photographer in the USA and very much sought after for sessions, lectures ect. Here are the posts where he says he has been hired by Canon. There is other banter going on, but for those that won't even believe their own mothers, I put the whole thing in verbatum for you. Since the post together with this one is long, I will post the thread in a second post:
