FZ50 & Olympus TTL Flash

Has anyone gotten a chance to try the 50 with one of the Olympus TTL flash units? I haven't found a store in my area that stacks Olympus Falsh, or I'd try it out. Bet it works!!

Anyone?

I did a search but could not find anyone who has used an Olympus flash like the FL-40 or FL-50 with the FZ50. Are they TTL compatible?

Re: FZ50 & Olympus TTL Flash

Like others have said I'm sure the olympus will work I emailed sigma and metz, Sigma said they mainly produce for slr cameras, but metz said look at there compatability chart in the middle of september they will have the FZ50 listed most likely the 44 mz2 or 44 AF-4O which is for the olympus.
cheers

Re: FZ50 & Olympus TTL Flash

Just about any flash will probably work with the hotshoe center pin, but I would like to know if the FZ50 will adjust the flash exposure for Olympus speedlights.

Re: FZ50 & Olympus TTL Flash

HI.

I use the Olympus FL36 flash with my FZ50 and have perfect results.
All functions work including the TTL AUTO.
Up to now I have not needed to use either exp or flash compensation.

Have fun
Hubert

Re: FZ50 & Olympus TTL Flash

Congrats Hubert! You are the first person - that I know of - that has confirmed that on this forum.

My question now... is the TTL capability worth the $180 when a Sunpak 383 can be had for $100 cheaper with a much higher guide number? (Not being smart - I'd really like to know.)

Can't answer your question directly but, I have the TTL flash for my Kodak and it is great. Get the extra flash power and don't have to worry about the camera settings.

I'm sure I'll be getting the FL36.

I'm using the FL-36 with...

My E-1 and it's a treat. Perfect exposure every time including fill-flash and macro.
I have 2 Sunpak flashes, but they're now relegated to high power requirements.

My PZ5000AF, with it's built in remote sensor, can suplement the FL-36 when I need extra reach.

FL-20???

The FL-20 has TTL metering. Is it safe to assume that it(TTL) will work with the FZ-50?

Interesting Thread

I had previously posted question of the same nature as soon as I saw the pin layout for the FZ50. I drew the layout on a scratch piece of paper and went looking at other camers hot shoes to find the Olympus and the Pentax (I think) to be the same.

Now that somebody has confirmed the Oly TTL flashes work perfectly with the FZ50. I've got to decide how important that is to me relative to cost aswe all know my Sunpak 383 is very capable with some effort.

Don't bother with the FL-20. It has enough power for fill-in flash. It doesn't tilt or swivel. Might as well use the built-in flash.

Re: FZ50 & Olympus TTL Flash

Quality TTL speedlights are never cheap, even if they are cheap to manufacture, but it is one of the best investments you can make if you do flash photography. I have an FL-36 and a couple FL-40s. The Olympus flash system gives me very good results, better than my Canon EX-580. I only hope that the flash firmware was either supplied by Olympus or well researched by Panasonic since it is very difficult to get it right.

Re: I'm using the FL-36 with...

I didn't follow my own advise and bought a flash from a manufacturer other than the camera brand. I bought a Sunpak PZ40X II for my KM-5D because I wanted to get the smallest TTL flash I could find. Big mistake. I've always found the best flash to buy is the same brand as your camera. In this case, Herb's tests indicate an Olympus flash on the FZ50 should work fine. I suspect this is because Oly and Panasonic are in bed together.

Re: FZ50 & Olympus TTL Flash

I'm curious. The FL36 manual claims that the autofocus assist lamp on the flash only works with FourThirds cameras.

Does it work with your FZ50?

Thanks,

Re: FZ50 & Olympus TTL Flash

HI again.
Thanks for the comments.

1_ The assist lamp works fine with the FZ50.

2_ The TTL is worth every penny.
Works much better than my Cannon 550 and 580 0n a 20D.
No need to increase exposure either on the flash or the camera.
Up to now this is the best flash-camera combination I used.

I ordered the STO_FEN diffuser for it .It should work fine.

Keep having fun.

The Stofen works great with it. Especially for macro.
