Using Nikon F Lenses On Pentax K Bodies (LBA Post)

Okay, I guess I'm the only one crazy enough to try this, but I helped a friend sell some camera equipment. After playing around with the old Nikon F (Non-AI) lenses and one of the Nikon F2 bodies, I couldn't resist. So I bought:
Nikon F2
20/3.5, 24/2.8, 28/3.5, 50/1.4, 55/3.5 Micro, 105/2.5, 105/4 Micro lenses.

After three days of trying, and lots of patience, I finally discovered that the F mount fits fully within the K mount...now I've been using all those old lenses on my Pentax body! The 20/3.5 is an AI lens, and it doesn't fit as nicely as the others, but the rest fit with a little turn - and the 24/2.8 and 55/3.5 even lock in!

They're nice little lenses, they're all quite sharp and have decent bokeh. I haven't had time to do any testing with them, but in 'real world' they've done quite well. Here is a picture of the gear, and I'll follow this with some pictures.

Nikkor 105mm f/4 Micro

At f/4 - this was a neat butterfly - it had a trick end that mimicked its front. The 'antenna' even moved around!

More here...

If you're interested in more, I have some shots here:

I'll be expanding as time permits!

(PS - I fully intend to convert these to K mount, especially the 20/3.5 which doesn't fit so well, because I couldn't possibly use a Nikon camera! Actually, none of the Non-AI lenses will work AT ALL on the Nikon DSLRs because THEY CHANGED THE MOUNT...although Nikon peeps won't tell you that. Even the 20/3.5 AI lens will only meter on the D2 series, not the D50/70/80!)

Hope you enjoyed!

Can you explain some more please?

So if I went and bought a pre-AI Nikkor,
it would fit on a Pentax K?

Does it need modification?

How about focusing? Does it work at infinity?

thanks

Yes...

Yes.

No (but see below).

It does work! The register distance is slightly greater than the Pentax one, so it can still focus to infinity even though it sits a mm or so higher than it normally would.

thanks
csc

A note on fitting the lenses: You have to align the dot on the Nikon lens with about the 2:00 position as you look at the camera mount. It will slide down fully. Then, you give it a slight clockwise turn - this is where the AI lenses barely fit on but most of the Non-AI lenses turn about 1/16th of a turn which is more than enough to get a firm fit. Like I said earlier, the 55 Micro and 24mm turn far enough that they actually clear the locking pin, and they 'click' into place. None of the others fit like that, though.

It is a somewhat delicate operation at first, but as long as you don't force it - they fit.

I fully intend to swap out the mounts, but they work as-is to varying degrees.

(My 'brandrx' disclaimer - I neither support nor recommend anyone else try this crazy trick - I'm only letting you know the silly things I do!)

Oh goodness, this means I can add 3 more lenses to my collection...

When I'll tell my father that I can use his Nikon F lenses on my Pentax D he'll probably think I'm joking.
Best news of the day, thank you!

Ha ha, that's great! I'm glad I could 'help'.

Be sure to tell him that he CAN'T use them on the Nikon DSLRs (if they're Non-AI) - that will underscore how nice AND FUNCTIONAL our Pentaxes are.

LOL

"LBA has no cure and knows no bounds."

Be warned that the AI lenses don't work so well - the have a different flange at the bottom that makes them not fit so well (at least my 20/3.5 AI is this way.) But, I'm sure the modification to full-blown K-mount isn't too terribly hard.

FYI,
Sean

Thanks! The 55/3.5 Micro is a bit dim, but it is really small and light. Pretty easy and nice to use.

You put it exactly the way I would like to do. So; ditto.

Great idea, and fun, Sean!

Well, I don't agree with the above. You are just the first one to try this.

This is really cool Sean. Now I must get one of these lenses myself and give it a try.

The images you've shown are really good IMO. I really like the first two that were taken with the 55/3.5

Thanks for this thread. It opens up a whole new world for us.
