REALLY!!!

There was a guy next to me at the Raven's camp on Monday with a Canon 400 2.8. It was huge!. Made my 70-200 2.8 look like a small lens

I guess the Ravens don't care about us taking pics. I hope it stays that way.

Cool! There was another sports shooter on the sidelines with the exact same lens, made me feel good.

Great action phuddle!

It's just amazing what can be accomplished today with; whats propably the cheapest DSLR body on the market today, combined with reasonably affordable powerful 3rd party lens.
Quality stuff in my eyes.

Keep'em photos coming.

Re: Great action phuddle!

Thanks! I may need to upgrade the camera soon, it may be holding me back at this point I think. I am leaning towards the D200 but will wait to see the image quality of the D80 before I decide.

Re: Great action phuddle!

thanks for posting. please confirm that the Sigma does not have IS (VR).
Do you find that being a limitation?

Re: Great action phuddle!

No, no vibration reduction at all. I don't find it to be an issue in sports shooting. You need to have such a high shutter speed anyways to stop the action it negates the need. I find that by kneeling down, resting my elbow on my knee and shooting I can get very steady shots when I need to.

Great pics, I take a lot of my pics of Patriots training camp. Only question is how close were you, esp with a 200mm lens. With some of your pics i would think you would have to be right in the huddle.

At Patriots camp I would need at least a 400mm to get these pics.

Thanks for sharing. Chris

Is that the new 70-200 Macro or an older version?

I am from Spartanburg!

But that is not why I am posting. I am posting because the quality of your photos made me want to grab my Sigma 70-200 and try again. I am inspired. No way could I take shots like these. Gorgeous! Rivaling Randy's cheerleader motif.

Getting a bit difficult ...

... to keep up with linking to great pics from the D50
http://nikond50.dpnotes.com/american-football-photography/

I had a guest asking if the D50 was suitable for fast-action sports photography (comment at http://www.pbase.com/dlcmh/d50_amazing_pics ) - I guess in the correct hands, with the correct lens and lighting, the answer is a Yes.

Great photos. Reason for the handheld question is I'm looking at
this lens vs. the Nikon 70-200 mm VR.

And for shots with adequate lighting, this Sigma lens looks great.

When shooting stuff like that VR shouldn't be an issue because you need high shutter speeds to adequately freeze the action (unless you're panning ...so I'm told).

I'm also mentally debating purchase between both. In Canada the Sigma is 700$ cheaper, and they actually do have a good resale value because EX lenses are under warranty for 10 years.

Re: You're the person I want to ask

Your pictures are stunning, I've been asked to be the team photog for my son's Pop Warner football team. I do have the Nikon 80-200 2.8 lens - it's very heavy & I was looking to get a monopod, but after looking at your work, & reading this entire post I have gotten so much info, however, when you shoot, do you use AF-S or the continuous? I will be allowed on the sidelines too, do you have any advise for me?

Thanks so much!

Trish

Phuddle

phuddle, is the lens you used to take these shots the Sigma 70-200mm f/2.8 HSM DG? I'm looking into buying the lens you used, and don't want to get the wrong one by mistake. Thanks.
