Re: All my links to my photos have vanished! HELP!!!!

There has been a cat fight between Dp review and Smugmug over people who put discount coupon codes in their DP review signature, people have been doing it for at least two years now its seen as the wrong thing to do.
All links to smugmug now banned?
More discussion on this at the smuggers forum, Digital Grin.

No as I have unlimited. The photos are still working on smugmug just not here (and no direct linking is off). Seems others are now having this problem on dpreview as well.

hmm seems the image is now displaying.

Yup, there was just a thread about this that got nix'd by Phil.

Phil, if you're reading this, check out my Open Letter to Phil Askey on my Blog. I'd really like to get your response to this:

Anyone else have thoughts on this?

I just read the link to Phil about smugmug posts being deleted from this forum.. I have been a member of this forum for severasl years, and I have NEVER included a coupon number in a post. i think it is unfair to delete my post because of what others do. The individuals post should be deleted - not those who do not abuse the forums policy. i cannot post a picture otherwise.

Nobody is deleting anyone's posts, nobody has banned anyone and no URL blocks have yet been put in place. Don has now emailed me and we're trying to work out a solution.

Re: All my links to my photos have vanished! HELP!!!!

Which is of course what should have happened in the first place, rather than posting it on his blog. For those who still doubt my motives, I'll clarify: (a) I've no interest in making any money from smugmug or any other photo hosting site, (b) this came about from a number of complaints in recent weeks about the use of codes in signatures, (c) we counted no less than 980 users who have codes in their signatures (some examples below), (d) it is nothing short of commercial advertising, and no matter how much I like the site (and I've nothing against smugmug) I can't allow this kind of thing to go on otherwise there will be no limits as to what becomes acceptable.

Re: All my links to my photos have vanished! HELP!!!!

I see I'm being talked about behind my back on another forum, which is always nice.

Yes, I removed Don's original thread on the advise of someone else who suggested it would be better to remove it and have a discussion with Don offline (which we're now doing).

And one more thread which was simply someone testing my patience (of which tonight I am lacking, but I'm not allowed to be human in that respect).

Funny I didn't remove this one... Hmmm.

Phil....m

I am very happy and pleased to see that you and Don of smugmug are trying to work this out in some manner. I totally understand how this is advertising and I agree with your rules and understand.

Please keep us all posted as to what will be happening. I did join smugmug only because Pbase seemed to be having so many problems and I hope I did not spend money for a site that I cannot use.
Thank you for your time and effort and clairfication!

Re: Phil....m

Don has amended his 'codes' page and we will be (attempting to) block the posting of promotional codes in signatures, we'll be contacting anyone who uses them and will (respectfully) ask them to remove them (which we have done on a good dozen occasions in the past).

Re: Phil....m

Thank you Phil for your quick reply.

I know some how this matter will be resolved so that all involved will be happy and satisified.

Hopefully this will not get blown out of proportion and you will be able to rest easy. I know you work had to keep this site a good place and I have been a member for several years now and still come back!
Thanks again,
Kim Kaila

Question for Phil on the 'codes' issue....

Can we still put them in a message when people are asking about which sites we prefer? I don't put my code in my signature but when people ask, I have shared it in the message and gotten many new user referrals as a result. I would hate to see that eliminated.

Re: Question for Phil on the 'codes' issue....

Ya I agree. I made a new post when the price was going up to get people who were on the fence etc to signup before the price increase. I also will post in a thread asking about image hosting providers as weel. Putting it in your signature should be against the no advertising rules.

Good to hear. I'm not a smugmug user and don't know Don. But I see that you have a very legit concern and I see that Don's concern as legit as well. And Don seemed sincere in his desire to find a solution.

Personally, I don't think his current language addition is specific enough to communicate the issue. I've posted my suggestion for more specificity on his blog.

Hopefully, for all concerned, the "talks" are going well and you two will get this ironed out.

Good luck.
