What's the max card size for SD10?...

I think it's time I started investing in CF cards larger than 512MB and 1GB.

I've liked using these smaller cards and have pretty much treated them like "films rolls," ie: just a few pics per roll, then a new "roll" goes in. I've also been concerned about losing a card or a card getting corrupted. With smaller cards, if I lose ONE at least I wouldn't lose ALL of the shots.

But since the latter has never happened, I'm interested in going to 2GB and larger.

I have no idea what the max size is for the SD10....or if there is a max size. Is there? Thanks....

I think 2 Gig is the max for SD 10 formatted cards. You can use 4 Gig if you format them somehow with your computer, but I think the max size for FAT 16 is 2 Gig. You can format a 4 Gig on the SD 10 and use it, but only 2 Gigs will be available.

I thought I heard somewhere, either from Sigma themselves (NY) or on this forum, that 2GB was the max size per the firmware...

Now, the thing I'm not sure about is why... Is it because the SD10 doesn't recognize > 2GB? or is it merely that the camera can't format the card on its own?

I know I answer a question with a question, but something stuck in my mind, as these 4GB cards (Sandisk Ultra IIIs, etc.) were being introduced, that the SD10 couldn't handle more than the 2GB...

Re: What's the max card size for SD10?...

Good evening, FWIW, in my roughly 5000 photos on the SD10, I've had trouble with 2 different CF cards. One 512 MB card I threw away after it gave me repeated problems. I've kept the 1GB card but don't trust it -- I use it now at home to transfer files around from computer to computer -- ie files that wouldn't be lost if it malfunctioned again, as it did twice in Norfolk October 2005. Lost about 50-60 photos....but nothing important. My take-away lesson: use 512 MB cards by preference. I wouldn't use greater than a 1GB card personally. I have 8-9 512MB cards presently, numbered, I use them in sequence, really more than I've ever needed. All are either Lexar or SanDisk, including the problem cards. Also I really do not see much difference in write-to-computer speed via card reader among the different CF card speeds, from basic to 'ultra' high speed cards.
Best regards, Sandy

2Gb is the largest that the SD10 can format, but if you format a 4Gb card correctly, the SD10 can write to it. I have both a 2Gb and 4Gb SanDisk Ultra II CF card for my SD10.

I saw a posting in this forum for formatting the 4Gb card from the DOS prompt:

Format : fs:fat a:64K

I also recall a note or two that some CF card readers may not be able to format the 4Gb card, so maybe use a newer one if you have problems.

you can use 4 gb (i am using microdrive) but it needs to be formatted diferently using a computer. if you like smaller capacity, use sd card ($15 or less for 1 gb) and buy an adapter to cfII that will fit the sdxx.

This is exactly what I use. I use the PNY cf adapter and a 32x Lexar 1gb SD card (I only have the one card.) In about 6000 images, with my SD9, I've never had the first hiccup. Now, I'm thinking about buying 2gb Lexar 133x SD cards ($129ea @ B&H.) Can someone comment on the reliability of the Lexar 133x SD cards?

FAT 16 news

It's been a while since we've gone over this here, so here it is again:

The FAT 16 filesystem can go up to 4 GB volumes. But many FAT 16 implementations interpret the limitation of cluster size differently than the ultimate limit, and so only go to 2 GB.

Windows: most recent Windows version can handle 4 GB. Older ones (95 and 98, iirc) only handle up to 2 GB.

Mac: OS 9 can mount 4 GB FAT 16 volumens. OS X can only mount up to 2 GB.

Sigma: Can mount and use up to 4 GB, but only format up to 2 GB.

Microsoft has lots of online tech notes detailing what's behind these limits.
