IMO, It's very good & worth getting if you can. You do have to roughly pre-focus manual lens's first to get within the adapters autofocus range, but it works very well.

I don't know what they go for secondhand but I picked up a new one for AU$250 last year.

Cheers,

They are good but I suspect not as good as the Tamron 1.4x or Sigma 1.4x EX in terms of optical quality but I have never seen them compared.

I bought mine new in 1989 for about AU$239 and sold it last week on eBay (gone in 26 minutes!!!! on a "buy it now") for US$100 which was I think a pretty good price for the buyer (a forum member, no less!) as it is in mint condition.

I posted this a couple of weeks ago to show the drop in resolution you get when you use the AF 1.7x. In real life the drop off doesn't seem quite so dramatic as this and I have to say that even my Sigma 28-70/2.8 EX at 70mm and f/2.8 is perhaps as bad as this

Centre crop at 100% pixels taken with FA77 @ f/2.8

.. now taken 1.7x further away with AF1.7x + FA77 @ f/2.8

I think you are looking at the same auction I am. They had a "buy it now" of $AUD180 but somebody set the story at $100 and, like most of these, it has now gone beyond the original "by it now" price (lucky seller)

cheers

It's mine...

Hi Guys,

The above mentioned Tc is mine. It's a good unit for what it does, but I don't need it anymore. I bought it off LanceB, but didn't get the use out of it, so off it goes. Buy it now price was 180, but someone bid on it, so it will end where it will end I guess.

Cheers,

Re: Pentax f 1.7x AF Adapter Good?

Hi Dean,

I have one and like it -- When coupled to a good lens, I think it only degrades IQ only marginally, but I know that I'm not as critical as many here.

I use it mainly for birding with the FA*300/4.5, which gives me a hand-holdable (when necessary) 510mm f7.65 which works well with my established MO of walking around or driving and taking advantage of opportunities that present themselves.

I actually like the fact that it has a limited focusing range which makes for less time wasted hunting. Once you get used to the drill, it's pretty quick in good light.

Some examples can be seen in the following posts:

IIRC, I paid @ $165US this past January, and don't have any regrets.

Hope that helps some

Hi Scott Rylance, looked at shots from Scott snostorm and they looked good. Because it is now sitting @ $Au191 I'm sure you won't mind me asking if it would be better than a vivitar 2x auto TC, forgive me if I'm being too forward.

No that's cool Dean. I've never used the Vivitar 2x af, but from what I've heard, the Pentax is a little better. I think the forum member branxs (Ron)
has both of these and he would know.
Cheers.

HI

I have seen these go for silly amounts on ebay before. I think thats because of the ability to autofocus manual lenses rather than the use as an 1.7 converter. Do any of the other converters mentioned inthis thread (or any others) turn manual focus lenses into auto focus ones? (I love mine on a 50 1.2 stopped down).

Hi Niel, I don't think they do. Niel have you got a 50/1.2?

I've had one of these for 12+ years. I've always seen this thing refered to as an AF adapter but I've never been able to use it in that fashion. All of my non-AF lenses ever worked with it on the DS. The mechanism would go in and out of focus, but never lock. But, I just tried it on my newish A50/2.0 and it works great. Doesn't work on the Tak135/2.5 though. I've considered selling it several times, but I may have to reconsider now.

Anyone know how it works on some of the older long primes, like the A300, etc.?

It should work on lenses up to f4.5, although not the A70-210/4.

I'm surprised to hear about the T135/2.5. It's not preset is it?
Perhaps the contrast is very low? Perhaps you didn't understand
about how you have to manually put the focus in range first?

The age doesn't matter. The focus is fast. The AF range will be
narrower.

I'm not sure what you mean by "preset". I was trying to lock onto various things in and around my neighborhood in high summer sunlight. Quite contrasty. I was trying to get the Takumar into approximate focus and let the AF adapter do the fine focusing. Didn't work, but I'm sure it's me.

I'm almost ready to get into the long prime club. I want a long prime, f4 or smaller. I've been sniffing around for something in the A300/A400 range, not A*. Can't afford that stuff yet. FA if I can get it, but MF is alright. The focus is baseball and wildlife.

Hi Niel, yes rang the Niel Holmes I know and surprisingly came to the same assumption. Do you know how your 50/1.2 compares to the 50/1.4 & 1.7's, I didn't realize this lens was made.

I just made a post about my SMC Takumar 135/2.5 used with my Pentax-F 1.7X AF Adapter at http://forums.dpreview.com/forums/read.asp?forum=1036&message=18695307

Anyone know how it works on some of the older long primes, like the

I use mine all the time with my Penax-A*300/4 and it works just great IMO.

FYI: Pentax f 1.7x AF Adapter...

The Pentax-F 1.7X AF Adapter is no longer made but can be found in all the various sources for used lenses. I like the Pentax-F 1.7X AF Adapter so much that I just bought my second copy from KEH (US $165) as soon as it became listed.

You can download the Pentax-F 1.7X AF Adapter manual at (12th from bottom): http://www.pentax.com/docstore/index.cfm?show=6

The manual states that you have to use it with f2.8 or faster lenses. However, don't take that as a fact. I have used mine with f5.6 lenses in very good light with some degree of success. I consistantly use mine with my Pentax-A*300/4 for the equivilent of a 510/6.8 autofocus lens.

I can make mine work with almost any AF or MF f4.5 or faster lens that I have including the M42 screwmount lenses. I tried it out with my Pentax SMC 500/4.5 and it almost worked but I found it did not quite focus properly and that this monster lens is better used by manually focusing it. The only other lens I found that it didn't seem to work very good with is my Pentax-A 28-135/4.

My favorite lenses (in no particular order) to use with the Pentax-F 1.7X AF Adapter are: Pentax-A 35-105/3.5, Pentax-A 35-70/4, Pentax-A*200/2.8, Pentax-A*300/4, MF ATX SD Tokina 80-210/2.8, Pentax-A 100/2.8, and Pentax-M 120/2.8

I made a post a couple of days ago about using my M42 screwmount SMC Takumar 135/2.5 with my Pentax-F 1.7X AF Adapter but apparently no one was interested because there were no replies. Anyway the post is at http://forums.dpreview.com/forums/read.asp?forum=1036&message=18695307

My impression of the Pentax-F 1.7X AF Adapter is very favorable as you can probably tell.
