TZ1 Favorite Photos

Can people post some picture from the TZ1 so we have a small collection of samples ? (full size links are prefered...)

I'm seriously considering this camera, I went to CC today and the thing is pretty compact considering the zoom. it's a little bigger than the canon s30/s40

Thanks!

Re: Here's one...

John, you've gotten some amazing images with your tizzy, what settings/scene mode do you use most? I just got mine and still playin around tryin to figure out the best settings. I do find "party" mode seems very good in dim light Any comments or suggestions will be etched in stone....you are (so far) the KING TIZZY!

Use most? HA!

My settings vary all over the map, but I shoot mostly in "Normal" mode, and what chiefly varies is the EV value for the particular type of lighting. For Egrets, they're devilishly difficult to get right exposure-wise, due to their very reflective, gleaming white feathers. Here's the EXIF file for the shot I posted:
http://John-Reed.smugmug.com/photos/newexif.mg?ImageID=69693450

You can see my settings there, the only thing I had control of was the EV value of -1. I was shooting with my Red Dot Sight, hence the panning effect, and the ability to "freeze" the bird's movement, more or less, at 1/250, which is kind of slow for a flying bird if you're not panning its motion. But doing it that way led to a nicely blurred background of greenery, an effect I liked. By the way, that photo has NO post-processing of any kind applied, not even cropping.

In addition to the many excellent photos posted here, Doug Lerner over on dcresource . com posted many photos from Japan while the rest of us were waiting for the TZ1 to arrive in other countries.

See Doug's photo thread:
http://www.dcresource.com/forums/showthread.php?t=18804
and his earlier posts in this thread:
http://www.dcresource.com/forums/showthread.php?t=18184

For many of us, watching that second thread was all the convincing we needed.

I loved Doug's shots too...

The only problem I had with evaluating them is that, as Doug said, he wasn't actually posting images from the camera, rather he was posting screen shots of the photos, as they appeared on his PC. But he truly has to be given credit for being the first public TZ1 user to introduce us all to the little camera.

In my case, I sort of "fell for the specs" of the TZ1, and pre-ordered one before I'd seen any images at all, or maybe just a few of Doug's, which didn't sway me one way or the other. I'm such a "techno-freak" I just had to see what the new Venus III could do, and to have such a small camera with a powerful zoom just sort of twisted my arm, so to speak.

Dave and John are just showing off. Man, those are some nice shots no matter what the camera. You could hand me the best camera in the world and I'd never get shots like that.

I'm hoping however that the TZ1 will make even my shoddy photography look better.

I agree. I own both the tizzy and the FZ30 and I haven't goten a pic with the tizzzy anywhere near the quality I get with the 30. Granted, I've only had the tizzy less than a week but still....I was considering returning it and picking up an FZ7. Any thoughts Dave or John? Would I get better results with the 7 vs tiz? I'm still a newbie but I get great results with the 30 and pretty much delete city with tiz.

I asked Doug about that, and got his permission to post the following here:

... begin quote ...

The first pictures I posted were screenshots. The rest (the ones in
web albums where the thumbnails were in frames down the left side)
were all resized by a web album generating program I use called

TalaSoft.) ... I chose basically half of full resolution (taking at 3Mpixel size) for my Talaphoto images, which makes for a nice dramatic result.

...end quote ...

So Doug's photos, except for the very first, are normal web posts.

C'mon guys...

You asked for "favorite photos?" What did you want? The WORST ones instead? I don't have any special Tizzy tips, but I do notice that the photos I like most tend to have negative EV bias. Now here's a flower shot I liked:

What was my "secret" on that one? Here's the EXIF:
http://John-Reed.smugmug.com/photos/newexif.mg?ImageID=66601311

The only "secret" would be maybe that I didn't shoot it at maximum wideangle, but I nudged the zoom lever up to push it into the macro "sweet spot" range of somewhere just under 2X zoom. Other than that, I just walked up to the flower and snapped the shot, cropped it a little later on, but that's it.

Another "open secret" of mine is that I prefer shooting in OIS mode 1. I also will say that I tend to shoot a subject more than once, and often throw shots away when I don't like what I see in the Quick Review. I don't know what Dave's "secrets" are, but I've admired a lot of his shots with whatever camera he uses.

Here are a few of my Tizzy shots...

I too prefer to take pics with a negative exposure bias; it was on -1.33 for both of these. When I first saw these on my LCD monitor I was startled as to how rich and vibrant the colors were. And they were well-exposed considering the shadows. It seems like the new Venus engine really does its work.

Best Wishes,
Steve

Re: USB Convertible?

That's a new one on me. Sounds like you got a good deal on the camera, though. Enjoy!

Re: USB Convertible?

Yeah there are 2 types... one from sandisk that flips in the middle.

and one that the end of it is a usb connector.

I've never had SD cards always compactflash so i used a pccard to transfer to the computer. (i hate using the camera to transfer files...)
