FZ30 and TCON17 or DCR-2020PRO

Has anyone used both a TCON17 and a Raynox DCR-2020PRO on an FZ30, who can supply a comparison between these two lenses.

If you have a DCR-2020PRO/FZ30 combo, but have not used a TCON17, I would also like to hear if you are happy with the set-up.

Reason I am asking, is I just purchased the DCR-2020PRO but am not sure if I like this lens yet. I still have to go out and get some "real world" shots, but my initial impressions are mixed.

Thanks for any replies!

Re: FZ30 and TCON17 or DCR-2020PRO

Sorry for the delay in responding but I just saw your question.

I have the Raynox 2020Pro and am very happy with it. I will say that I have not used the TCON176 but everything I have heard of it, any pictures I have seen from it, have been very good.

As to the 2020 specifically, overall I am very happy with the lens. It provides great reach and good clarity with just a bit of softness at the edges. This is not a big problem for me though it might be for others. The 2020 does not vignette after about 6x and does not result in a huge drop in light. As I say, I am overall very pleased.

I would encourage you to spend some time with "real world" pictures and see for yourself.

HTH,

Tony

I have both and both are good. I think the 2020 is for when I really want to get out there. The TCon 17 is a little more flexible in tht you have more room in the zoom range. The 2020 cost twice as much.

I can speak to the Tcon17... you won't go wrong if you go this route... its worth a visit to the henrys outlet store (used stuff store) to see if you can get a deal on one of the lenses... if you don't want to drive into Toronto you can always call them and ask

Re: FZ30 and TCON17 or DCR-2020PRO

I have both; though I often want as much reach as I can get (for birds and such, overall the TCON17 (mine is the B300, earlier model) is a more versatile and useful lens.

If you can center the subject and it doesn't fill the frame, the 2020 is excellent because of good center sharpness with not much color fringing, and the 2.2x magnification is considerably better than 1.7. However, if you get away from the center, fringing and sharpness suffer.

The 17 on the other hand, is usable full-frame, with very little fringing and excellent sharpness. Being much cheaper and also more compact is a bonus, along with fitting the native threads with no adapters needed.

So if your main purpose is not just pulling in small birds at great distances (or something similar), the 17 would probably be the most useful of the two.

Tcon 17 is excellent

If only the center of the pic photoed by 2020 can be used, that means you have to crop the pics. So the proprioty of 2020 is not so remarkable. But 2020 is heavier and bigger.

I have a tcon17, it worked very well. The following link is my pic gallery photoed by fz30 added tcon17

Re: FZ30 and TCON17 or DCR-2020PRO

Thanks Tony for your feedback. I have this lens for 2 weeks to try out, and can return, no-questions-asked if I am not satisfied. I have been taking some more pictures with it and am getting better results, but I still need to go out for a few hours with it to get some more testing done.

Re: FZ30 and TCON17 or DCR-2020PRO

Hi Falthap- I know what you mean, the reach on the 2020 is quite impressive. I can get a good amount of detail on objects over 200 feet away!- but I am looking at using it (or a TCON17) to get bird pics from about 20-30 feet away. Thanks for your comments.

Re: Comparison shots below....(m)

Hi gil- I see you are getting a lot more shots with the Ricoh. You have some great bird pictures with it- a lot of these are typical of what I am trying to get. These are great for comparison purposes. Thanks!

Re: FZ30 and TCON17 or DCR-2020PRO

Hi Mike- I remember trying your Tcon out on that photo shoot, but I didn't take many pictures with it. I bought the 2020 at the Henry's show just last weekend, after seeing it at the Raynox booth. I kinda like that the 2020 has an outer filter thread (but 82mm filters are not cheap). It is also quite larger than the Tcon, but I find it easy to hold on to, to steady the camera. I want to get some more sample pics with the 2020 to see if I want to return it or not and maybe try out a Tcon.

Thx

Re: FZ30 and TCON17 or DCR-2020PRO

I have read the same thing about the 2020: that it is soft at the edges, and I have noticed this in some of my sample pictures. My main purpose of the lens is for getting closer bird shots, so as you note- this may not be a problem for my use. Thanks for your input Gary!

Re: Tcon 17 is excellent

Thanks hexie9 for your feedback- BTW great pics in your gallery! I'm still in the decision process but taking everything into consideration. I kinda like that the 2020 is bigger because I find it easy to hold on to, for help in stabilizing the camera.

Re: FZ30 and TCON17 or DCR-2020PRO

Thanks for your post- it seems that there is a lot of purple fringing on the pic taken with the 2020, otherwise the two pics are very similar (at least to my eyes). I am planning to use this lens mainly for getting birds closer up.

Re: Comparison shots below....(m)

What is needed for the Tcon17 to fit on the FZ-30, only a step up ring to 55mm? Also are you using a Tcon17C or a Tcon 17F?

Thanks llife: these are good examples. I (and many others who are considering a teleconverter) appreciate the work you did here.
