I paid 26$ for the filter at http://www.cameraworld.com not so bad price i

I've read all the posts. Not surprised it turned to kind of debate.
Obviously, one must balance between what one can do with a filter
and in software. I've thought of purchasing this filter so I could
see the effect I want through the LCD immediately, rather than
fidgeting in software later. As filters go, I have UV, polarizer,
and star. I would like to also soon purchase a ND filter to lower
shutter speeds, a grey graduated filter to make sky darker without
affecting landscape beneath, and perhaps the dbl fog filter! I
spend enough time post processing my pics already. It's nice to let
filters do some of the work!

Hi,

I am looking to buy a tiffen double fog filter as i read that this
filter will create the same effect as in real fog, with forground
objects clearer than objects in the background.

This is interesting as the usual fog filter is making everything
foggy, foreground or background the same.

I was wondering if anyone tried the double fog filter and if so, is
it possible to see some samples?

thanks

Re: Anybody tried a Double Fog filter?

No i have not niticed that..where exactly do you see this? because what is written Simulated on the images, is NOT from Tiffen page but from some camera shop that have put up some example for fog filter in general.

Here is the photos from Tiffen.com

http://www.tiffen.com/fog%20filters.htm

I have no idea where you can see simulation on these, but if you do you have very good eye!

I talked to Tiffen today and they will send me a catalogue, they said that the photo are scanned from their catalogue and its easier to see in their catalogue.

manually touched up by their people... most probably with a

Note that a the double fog cannot possibly differentiate between
far and near objects, it most probably is a graduated filter that
requires you to compose the picture so that "far" objects are in
the darker areas.

In the double fog, the cabin in the foreground is clear...which
look like REAL fog.

Also with fog filter the objects are still relatively sharp...the
fog filter mimic the real fog by having a special surface that
affect the light itself...so in lighter area you have a more
prononced effect..just like in real fog. This you cannot acheive
with post processing..if anyone can show me a good looking post
processing fog image, i am more than willing to consider that
choice..but so far none.

Re: Anybody tried a Double Fog filter?

Another thing that i found is from all the simulated samples i have seen, they all look unatural to me. I tried myself to recreate the fog effect in Photoshop and even if i am very good in Photoshop and know all the techniques, i spent long time trying to tweek this and i am not happy with the result:

http://www.pbase.com/c700/fog

It is also difficult to creat a mood with postprocessing as you don't knwo much what color to use and if you use white it is putting the picture too white. The fog filter will keep the natural color of the environment and will not wash out the color as much as a postprocessing do.

Anyway my original post was for asking if anyone had tried it and if so if they liked it or not. So far none of the people that using the postproccessing technic have actually tried the filter and so they cannot give a fair opinion of the filter.

Re: Anybody tried a Double Fog filter?

i could only found the double fog 3...wich i could find the 5 but i could not find it anywhere.

I receive mine yesterday so i will try it when i have the chance. You have to wait for an overcast day to use them, as foggy scenes don't match with crisp shadow produced by the sunlight, so cloudy or overcast days work best.

Also this should be really nice in scene near the ocean, when you want to amphasis the existing fog. I remember i had a scene with fog and it was really nice to see this with my eye but i was desapointed with the 35mm SLR film shot because i could not see much fog in the photo. I never tried to take real fog so far with my digital camera and if this happen i will use the double fog to enhance the effect of the regular fog.

Also it should be nice to use it in the wood...well, so much to experiment with!

Re: Anybody tried a Double Fog filter?

Hi Mike,

Did you took some new picture with your double fog? i took some today if you wish to see. It was quite late and not the best light for the fog filter, but i can see already there is a big difference from my regular fog filter.

The foreground objects are more clear and the fog effect looks more natural.

Hi Daniella,

Checked out your site last night, enjoyed your pics! Looks like the filter is working very well for you. I still haven't done the shots I want yet with the filter, although I drove past some tall timber today and wonder why I didn't stop!

Take care,

Hello Daniela,

I write to you from the future (2022).

Many years have passed and above all this world is not that of the past.

I am writing to you because I loved all your contributions that I subscribe to.

I am a photojournalist for media in which I had to photograph very extensive reports that covered many aspects. I can say that I am an expert in Photoshop since it came out and with the first Mac.

I was also "anti-filters" for not adding a crystal in front of my precious lenses but that changed radically when I found out about Ira Tiffen's work. no matter how expert you are, there is no software to "recreate" the real diffusion produced by a diffusion filter. Not even with the Tiffen software that came out and few know about.

I speak knowingly because -so far- I have used (and bought) this list:

Hola Daniela,
