Do You Use Eclipse/Pec Pads to Clean Your Lenses?

If so, why do you think this is a good choice?

If not, why not? What do you use?

Hi Bernie,

Hope all is well, have fun with Ron et al in Alaska. I used to use these for sensor cleaning, but now I use the Visible Dust products.

I dont use these to clean my lenses. I use a Lens Pen, and if that does not get it clean (both ends), I use a microfiber cloth and a quick breath.

Do not forget the sensor brush

While wet cleaning is always going to be required, I have found that wet cleans can be required much less if you use the sensor brush. I did not think it would work but I was wrong! An outstanding product!

Re: Do You Use Eclipse/Pec Pads to Clean Your Lenses?

Is there any reason not to use it? Is it too harsh for the lens coatings?

Hi Paul!

How's it going with you? Been on any unique photo trips lately? We had a great time in Bryce Canyon last month and I'm really excited about Alaska. I don't have the Lens Pen but I know Ron uses one. Seems kind of small for cleaning an entire lens. Is there a reason you don't think Eclipse and Pec Pads will work on the lens?

Don't use Pec-Pad on lenses

It just smudges the hell out of them.
I use coolmax headband and then blow the lint off for the lenses.

Same experience

PecPads leave really bad smudges on the glass. The only reliable way I've found so far is to use an old white cotton t-shirt washed multiple times (to remove loose lint). Works like a charm, every time.

Re: Hi Paul!

Hey Bernie,

Thanks for the note, and I went and looked at your pbase galleries from that utah trip - you got some really nice shots, and it looked like you all had a great time! Was in the Grand Caynon for 8 days in May doing a photo workhop, and it was spectacular.

It's amazing how well a lens pens works on a large lens (esp if you use the Giotti Rocket Blower first).

It looks to me that Eclipse/Pec Pads should work great on a lens (after all, hell, we have been using that to clean our sensors, although I think the sensors have a very dense hard AA filter in front of them).

have a GREAT time in Alaska, look forward to your pics.

Re: Hi Paul!

Paul,

Went out and bought the Hakuba Lens pen this afternoon. Was nervous to use it on a lens but I had a really bad smudge on my B+W Circular Polarizer. Hit it with the Lens Pen and bingo it's gone and the filter is clean a as can be. I'm sold. I keep UV filters on all of my lenses so I'll be cleaning them all with the Lens Pen from now on. Thanks,

Re: Do You Use Eclipse/Pec Pads to Clean Your Lenses?

Uh-oh. I misread the question...I'm so used to seeing Eclipse/Pec Pads talked about for sensors.

I retract my answer!! I use that combo for my sensor. But not for lenses. The stuff is too harsh, and if you use anything but a Pec Pad it leaves streaks.

I use filters over my lenses, and never have to clean them. I use breath and a tissue or pec pad to clean the filter. If I do have to clean a lens, I use breath or lens cleaner and Kodak lens tissue.

Sorry about not being alert first time around.

Ken,

No problem; I assumed you had misread it. You really should try the Hakuba Lens Pen; I just got one today and it is very good.

Re: Do You Use Eclipse/Pec Pads to Clean Your Lenses?

Lens pen sounds like something I should add in next time I order stuff from B&H or wander into a local dealer.

I actually do have a little bigger lens cleaning arsenal than breath and tissues. I've got a bottle of Clear Sight lens cleaner, a couple of microfiber cloths, and a Giotto Rocket Blower.

This thread reminds me that I should give my protective filter a careful cleaning with Clear Sight and a microfiber cloth tonight. I'm headed on the road for a couple of weeks, and I should at least start with a clean filter on the lens I'm taking. Just did a quick swab this afternoon with breath and a tissue - it deserves better.

Ken,

So you can use lens cleaning solution with a microfiber? I guess I thought you either used the microfiber alone or you used the lens cleaning solution with lens tissues; didn't know you could combine the two??

Same here. There aren't many times just the Rocket Blower won't take care of it though. Sometimes I use the LensPen. I've been using them for years and have never had a scope or lens damaged. I've used Eclipse and the included PecPads without damage but it does leave streaks usually.

If eclipse left streaks on lenses....

then it would do so on a sensor also. Eclipse is alcohol, it evaporates to nothing.

Actually if you use too much Eclipse you will leave streaks behind on the sensor. I've seen streaks on my lenses after using Eclipse but I believe it was residue left over that the cleaning distributed differently.
