Canon 28-70mm 2.8 L and Canon Zoom Tele 70-200mm f/4.0L EF USM Auto Focus Lens USA

Do you need a tripod collar for 70-200/4L? Costs $165!! Or is there
a third-party brand for the collar?
You could probably live without one. The 70-200 4L is about the same size as the 200 2.8L and that one doesn't come with a tripod collar either. You don't have to buy the $165 version though. The $78 one (the black one) works just fine on the lens.

I bought one of the $78 ones for my 200 2.8L and swapped it back and forth on the 70-200 4L and it worked fine. The same collar worked just fine on my sigman 170-500 and my canon 80-200 2.8L, basically they're designed to fit around a circumference of 8.5 inches (roughly) and are interchangeable.

I don't know why Canon lists them for specific lenses unless they've decided a black tripod collar is incompatible with a white lens?

Although more expensive than the 70-200 (and heavier) you might want to look at the 100-400 L lens. I got mine used at B&H. I love it more than I ever thought I would. Coupled w/ some extension tubes or the 500D lens (magnification lens) - it's awsome.
