Macro shots taken with the EF18-55mm lens?

Hey. My first time on the boards here.

I'm seriously considering getting a Canon 300D. I would just like to know how good the supplied lens is for macro shots (seeing as I'll be spending a lot of time doing macro and portrait photos).

I'd be very grateful if someone could show me some uncropped/unedited macro shots taken with the Canon 300D and it's EF18-55mm lens.

Thanks very much,

Samantha

While the kit lens focusses reasonably closely (.9 ft) it is not good for true macro. It will do fine for whole flowers but you will need help to do insects etc. I don't have 'uncropped and unedited' to post here (the files from this camera are much too large to post without altering) but this is just reduced to fit:

The kit lens as is has max magnification of 0.28x so the min landscape format subject width is 82mm or a bit over 3 inches. You can get more magnification with a close up lens (get a double element one like the 250D or Nikon's) or an extension tube. A 12mm extension tube would be the best length for the kit, it gives a magnification range of 0.23x to 0.81x. Check to make sure the tube fits before buying a third party one since the EF-S type lens mirror bumper may not fit.

Taken with the kit lens and DReb / EOS 300D. It's a truly decent or should I say great starter lens. Hope these help!

Re: Macro shots taken with the EF18-55mm lens?

Samantha,

The kit lens is a good value. Other lenses are sharper, but I have taken to recommending that folks decide for themsleves. I decided to upgrade because I thought the kit lens was not sharp. Turns out, my workflow was the problem, and maybe not the lens. I haven't gone back to verify this, so I could be wrong.

Anyway, here are a couple macro shots. Unedited, uncropped. A little USM goes a long way on macros. If you want to see the edited versions, there are here (EXIF is there as well):

http://tomhole.com/Focus%20Comparison%20Page.htm

I think I would be happy if all I had between 18-55mm was the kit lens. I might re0install it for a better evaluation now that I have had other lenses for a while.

You can check my macro gallery at http://www.ocando.net/gallery/macro.htm

Here are just a few samples. Some are taken with a +4 close up adapter, and some others with a nikkor 50mm MF lenst inverted over the 18-55mm with a male to male adapter ring.

You can also check my tutorial at http://www.ocando.net/macrolight_en.htm for the macro setup I've been using.

Re: Macro shots taken with the EF18-55mm lens?

As others have said, it's a close up rather than macro lens. It's not as sharp as a macro lens would be, nor can it focus as closely. Having said that, it seems to do a pretty reasonable job for close ups.

Here's a Camellia I shot in my garden today:

and here's a 100% crop of the central boss of stamens.

The original was shot at ISO 200 in shade, 1/30sec at f8 and is uncropped. Parameter 2 and USM in Photoshop of 300, 0.6, 2. Apart from resizing I used no other post processing on the original JPEG.

Hope this helps

Nice pics!

Good test of what the kits lens can do - I have been pleasanty surprised by the kit lens for close ups too.

Re: Fantastic photos from you all

I would like to say thanks also for showing all your photo's in this thread.

I am also interested in taking these sort of photo's and only purchased my 300d in November, so this has been very useful for me too, as I havent had a huge amount of time yet to experiment with it, but spring is just around the corner

In time I hope to get a macro lense, although not just yet as I had to get a telephoto first, so it is very nice to see these pics taken with the standard lense. Thanks!

Re: Macro shots taken with the EF18-55mm lens?

This isn't exactly what you're asking for - it's been cropped slightly, resized for the web, and sharpened a bit, but you can easily do this with the kit lens and some closeup filters.

Re: Macro shots taken with the EF18-55mm lens?

The instructions are on my site, on http://www.ocando.net/macrolight_en.htm , but is simply threadding a male/male ring on the front of the kit lens, and screwing the normal in the ring, inverted. Both lenses will be face to face, and the kit lens mounted on the camera, of course.

The benefits, are extremely high magnification. You are simply using a very high quality close up attachment lens (a 50mm) but a very fine one, high quality corrected optics. That's it.

Regards

Martin
