Test for A2 Grip sensor...

I am looking for a quick go/no-go test for the A2 Grip Sensor.

Something like a setting that would show activation when the sensor is enabled and then touch the sensor pads.

thx

This may or may not help.

["My two cents on the grip-sensor.

My grip-sensor on my A2 never worked either till I found out that I kept misreading the instructions:

Using the grip sensor to turn on the EVF:

In the setup menu set the following:
'EVF Auto Switch' to 'EVF Auto On'
'Grip Sensor' to 'ON'

When the viewfinder switch is in the 'A' position (the middle position not the top), the EVF will only turn on when your eye is up against it AND you are holding the grip sensor. Note the LCD display is always off in this mode.

My error was having the viewfinder switch in the EVF (top) position.

BTW - this also fixed the Full-time auto focus problem I had. In either continuous AF or with Flex Focus Point on, in single focus, the camera should refocus whenever you are holding the grip sensor. Note the camera does not do full-time AF in normal focus mode. I've not used FT AF yet but at least it now works.

I hope that yours is not really broken.

I love my A2,

Hope this may help.
Enjoy,
Pete H.

doesn't work for me

thanks peter

i tried this out on my A2 and the EVF swithces on regardless of whether or not i am touching the grip sensors.

I've tried so many combinations and have just accepted that the grip does not work.

I've also been unable to see the point of the AE lock on/off function in the set up menu ( not the AEL button) and any practical application for the "program manual" setting.

Any thoughts?????

I agree, the grip sensor does lnothing detectable on my camera, I leave it turned off.

The AE lock "off" allows you to lock focus as normal by half depressing the shutter without also locking the exposure, leaving that to the separate AE lock button. I don't use it, but I can see it's purpose.

The "program manual" is very odd, I can't imagine anyone wanting to work that way.

i thouht mine did nothing either, until i realized it's very sensitive. if your hands are completely dry, like mine usually is, it often won't respond. i think it needs a little moisture on your hands to work. i find that passing my fingertips over the grip sensor will make it work much better, i guess there is more body oil on my fingertips.

i leave this feature "on", since it allows me to lock exposure the same time i lock focus. then i can simply recompose and take the picture. i find pressing the AE/Lock button everytime i'm ready to lock exposure to be really inconvenient. I do however, have the AE/Lock button set to toggle/spot, so i have the spot meter readily available when i need it.

The "program manual" is very odd, I can't imagine anyone wanting to
work that way.

haven't figured this one out myself either.

Thanks Peter....

Thanks Peter for the description and setup of the grip sensor. Mine does exactely as you describe. It stays off even if my eye is looking through the EVF until I touch the grip sensor and then it comes on. The LCD stays off at all times. At least now I know that the sensor is working.

I just got my A2 a couple of weeks ago and this weekend is the first time I've had a chance to play with it. I had read the online manual several times prior to my purchase so I felt that I knew how all of this was going to work. All I can say is that reading it is one thing, playing with it takes a very much different learning skill. I am having a blast just trying to see if all is working ok on the camera. I have already passed my the reseller's return date so I guess this is mine and I'll keep it.

Again thanks to all in this forum who are so very knowledgeable and helpful.

Hi Bob,

Congratulations on getting your new camera.

I've had my A2 since June 2 and have read the manual at least 4 times. Still learning how to use new features almost every day. Wonderful camera.
