If you are shooting at your lens' widest (f/4 in my example) you don't get as sharp of a picture as if you could step it down a few stops. A f/1.8 prime lens at f/4 should give you a much better picture, than a consumer f/4 lens at f/4. Also if a lens starts at f/4, that is only at wide angle, and generally as you zoom out a new minimum f/stop comes into play. Basically what I meant unless you use a prime lens, you might be shooting at the limits of your setup.
