Olympus E-1 or Canon 10D ?

You have to forgive me because I'm really not that familiar
with the 10D, so I shouldn't even be talking about it, but....

We're talking about images out of the camera, right? Does the 10D
even have NR function built into the camera? Or does it rely on
noise reduction on the fly, w/o dark frame subtraction?

According to the review on this site, the 10D didn't fair to well
with a 3.7 minute exposure at night. You can clearly see a significant
amount of stuck pixel noise at ISO 100.

Why I would choose the E-1 again: small, compact, lightweight,
excellent zoom range in just two lenses (when the rumoured
ultra-wide comes out we might coverage of 14-400 mm (35mm equiv) in
just three lenses!).

What I do miss in the E-system is primes. I would love to have a
fast normal (25mm) to just walk around with. It's a must-buy, after
the 50-200... :)
The 11-22 is my "walk around" lens, and my decision to buy the E-1 was based more on the performance of that lens than anything else. Canon and Nikon both have excellent bodies to choose from, but unless you pony up for a Canon with a "full-size" sensor, you'd be hard-pressed to get 22mm (equivalent) shots with no apparent linear distortion - like you can get with the 11-22 Oly. The Sigma and Nikon offerings that can only approach that kind of quality would hurt my neck.

The 100% viewfinder, dust-shaker and weather sealing are best things the E-1 body had going for it, for me. Perhaps Canon and Nikon (and Pentax and Fuji and...) will come up with those features on a body for less than $1500, but it ain't happenin' yet.

A pop-up "sunny boy" flash would have been nice, but I'm going to get a tiny FL20 and a dedicated off-camera cord instead. Red eye reduction? Who needs it...

I also want the 50mm f2 macro, but the next lens on my "wish list" would be a 17.5mm f1.4 (or thereabouts) prime. A "fast wide angle" is supposed to arrive sometime next year - the sooner the better!

Theoretical concerns about lenses designed for curved film planes and light falloff on the edes of digital sensors due to the angle of light seem to make great marketing hype. Meanwhile, "film-based" wide angle lenses seem to perform as well on full-frame dSLR cameras as they do on chemical cameras. I haven't seen anybody compare a Canon wide angle prime on a 1V and a 1Ds and decide that the 1V took better pictures.
Adrian,

There is an article on the E1 in Popular Photography (November
2003) which describes this effect. The illustration is very
similar to the one from the Japanese article. It briefly discusses
the curved film plane and the effects of the light rays on the film
vs the imaging sensor.

Joe; In the year + I've had my 2 10D's I've never shot a 3.7 min. exposure or had a single "stuck" pixel.I've taken thousands of shots at ISO 400-3200 using the 10D's low noise capability to capture low light and fast action images which would normally not have been possible at the quality which resulted. Some of these photos were hand held,IS assisted, night time shots. There is no dark field subraction system on the 10D to my knowledge.

Their prices don't include VAT because they're based in the Channel Islands. Has anyone basded in the UK experience of dealing with them? Did you get hit for duty or VAT?

Yes, 7dayshop are based in Guernsey and their prices do not include VAT, however even if you have to pay VAT I agree that it is a good price.

From other postiings that I have seen elsewhere it looks like it is very hit-or-miss whether or not you will be caught by Customs and asked to pay VAT. Some orders seem to get through without being caught whereas others don't. A few weeks ago it seems that most orders were escaping VAT, however in recent weeks it appears that Customs have woken up to what is going on and most orders are now being caught and the customers are being forced to pay VAT plus handling fees etc.

Image stabilization - am I missing the boat here? I shot with the Nikon F3 for years. Blew a lot of shots, but I can think of only one or two that were ruined by camera shake. Nice, but you can work around it's absence.
At 400mm, which is 640mm equiv on the 10D, how do you workaround it? Ah yes, you must mean a tripod, right?

That's ridiculous. If that were true, then the E1 would blow the doors off the 10D on resolution tests, instead of the other way around. See Phil's tests as a reference.
Jim,

The E-1 uses lenses designed specifically for digital photography,
meaning that they are optimized for a flat sensor rather than the
curved film plane. The 10D uses film camera lenses which do not
focus properly on a flat sensor (the DR or 300D can use the EF-S
lenses, which in addition to their intrusion into the mirror box -
they cannot be used on a 10D - they are designed for the CMOS
sensor, thus back/front focus issues do not occur with this lens).
