Attention all Female DpReview Participants

At the risk of getting my head handed to me on a platter, who
exactly is buying all those copies of "Vogue", "In Style" and
similar such magazines? The last time I thumbed through one of
those, I saw very few ads for power saws and the like.

Possibly the camera manufacturers have noticed this.

Wayne Larmon
I don't buy Vogue and the other girly magazines. Only place I actually see these are in hairdressers so maybe they keep them in business? lol

Me I'd rather buy digital photo magazine, photoshop magazine and PC format. Techonology and photographing natural beauty and fun times is far more interesting to me that looking at unnatural beauty airbrushed in womens magazines.. though thinking about it there's probably more photoshop examples in a single issue of those mags than photoshop magazine.. lol Also there are no ads for power saws but how many adverts have you seen in them for any technology or cameras? I've only seen adverts for slimming pills, hot chocolate and washing powders.. How very glam.. I'd imagine that most women who buy those mags probably are more interested in spending their money on some expensive handbag or dress or beauty treatment rather than a digital camera. If you consciously want a camera you look for the best value one not the most pink one to match your lipstick....

But isn't this the marketing plan for the BenQ camera that started this thread? That some woman want baubley fashion accessories.

Not to lay all baubledom on woman. I doubt that a woman invented neon light modded PC cases. Or monster trucks. But the manufacturer that recognizes a market and capitalizes on it is a smart manufacturer.

Good grief! Is there any difference between a male's eyeball and a
female's? Can't we both turn on a camera and read the instructions
or otherwise figure out how to use it? Oh, I see, the camera is
pink. Well, that will go perfectly with the pink pants and high
heeled shoes that I wear when I'm out photographing pink flowers....

Alice a.k.a Rebel in Pink :)
Actually, there is a difference: women often have better night vision & can see more color at night as well--men loose this capability a little sooner. Also, color-blindness tends to be male-oriented...
The BenQ E40 is designed to draw attention with its elegant cool red casing. A brushed metal sliding mechanism conveniently protects and allows for easy gripping of the camera. The E40 is now available for fun, fearless females.
Furthermore, you can also make creative "scrawling" directly on photos.
So sell all those FZ10's, DSLRs and the like, and get with the

Oh my will, we have time to do any photo taking in between painting
our nails, baking and doing the washing? ;)

Ack ack ack.. when will industries learn that ladies want the same
as men when it comes to technology, quality and value for money. We
don't need cutsie gimmicks and coordinating cameras. It's downright
condescending and makes me immediately want to look at something
else! Now if BenQ were offereing a camera like say the canon 300d
which was cheap, well specced and good quality then even I could put
up with the cutsie extras.. lol

Think I'll just stick with my canon G5,Fuji 2800z and continue
lusting over the DSLR's and thinking about possibly buying a nice
stabilised ultra zoom camera in the near future...

Right back to painting those nails and baking.. cough ... ;)

It is obvious if you spend much time reading the forums here at
DPReview that many men think that the most important characteristic
of a camera is its color (black). I'm not sure how different that
is to this new camera marketed to women.
Ha.

All the high end digital cameras are black.

Sony's flagship camera the F707/717 used to be silver, but the new F828 is black.

If you follow the internet arguments about the film cameras the Contax G2 vs the Leica M6, one of the biggest raps against the Contax is that it's silver.

And the Contax is a darn fine camera too! Too bad it's too much of a pain to set up a black and white darkroom in my apartment so I can use it. (There no longer seems much point to color film photography.)

Thanks for the info, Tuba Paul. So that explains why we should use a pink camera :-)

That's because its their entry level consumer DSLR. They want the
"pro" people to buy the more expensive black DSLRs.
Yes, of course, but you are missing the point. The point is that just like some women like cute, colorful cameras even though that has nothing to do with their photo taking ability there are some men that like black cameras just because they think they look cool even though the color has nothing to do with their photo taking ability. What's the difference?

I got the point the first time :) I was just impressed by Canon's brilliant marketing. The silver color of the low end Canon DSLR pleases the amateur photographer who is stepping up to a DSLR, but gently slaps the hand of the "pro" photograher for being too cheap to buy the more expensive model.

Also, these discussions have also traditionally gotten into the importance of "image." It is usually said that the pro photographer needs a big black camera so that people will take him seriously and think they are getting their money's worth. On the other hand, the silver camera is considered better for candid photography because it's not as intimidating.

For the ultimate in non-intimidating use a film disposable.

Yes, you are absolutely right about Canon's brilliant marketing. Many pros might feel a bit embarrassed to use the DRebel (but not all). A few months ago in Kyoto I saw a pro with a model and a couple of assistants taking photos of the model using a Contax medium format camera but he also had a Canon Digital Kiss (DRebel) that he was using.

Um, what kind of idoll did your brother-in-law get that this would be a fitting accessory? (Not that there is anything wrong with that.)

Men are certainly more likely to be congenitally colour vision imparied - male red-green colour blindness is a defect in the X chromosome where genes for M and L type cones are adjacent and are subject to transposition errors. They are so close - and also so close in colour response - that many think red-green separation was a late adaptation in human vision. Since women have two X chromosomes, and the defect needs to be in both, women are rarely RG colour blind (0.5%) but about 8% of men are. However women can act as carriers of the gene.

However night vision (as well as sensitivity to motion and peripheral vision) is entirely due to rods which are distributed all over the retina except the fovea centralis (where the cones mostly are). Although some research has indicated that women have more accute colour differentiation and men have better night and peripheral vision on average, I am not aware of any research that proves conclusively thats this is either true or if so whether it is a difference in the eye or the brain or just cultural (part of early training and differential stimuli).
