Canon 100-400 IS and 00 aperture error condition

I recently purchased the Canon 100-400 IS and have enjoyed using it for several weeks now. This past weekend I was at a hot air balloon rally taking pictures with my Rebel and some of these shots were towards or near the bright light of the sun. On one occasion the IS started hunting and the aperture setting displayed 00 in the viewfinder. There was no other error-ERR#, but the camera would no longer focus or take a picture. Cycling power did not fix the problem, I needed to remove and re-install the lens for the camera to work again.

I've read other posts about this porblem and was wondering how wide spread it was. Although I am past my purchase return date I am still well within the warranty period. Is it worth sending it back to Canon service or is this just a "bug" with this lens that cannot be fixed?

Thanks,

Bob
