Do you still prefer a D70 over a hacked 300D?

Thanks !

It's useful to have feedback from someone who has experience of both lenses.

Yup. I've owned both, and the Canon is better strictly because of
USM, but it also has it's pitfalls, which I'll outline below.

And the VR doesn't work on a tripod.

Neither does the IS on the 100-400. It's the "first generation" IS
that needs to be SHUT OFF when used on a tripod -- just like
Nikon's VR counterpart. Only Canon's long, expensive IS primes and
the 70-200/IS have the latest generation IS that can be used on a
tripod. The 100-400 does not.

Bottom line? No advantage for either.

I don't regard them as competitive.

Then you know little about either lens. Since I own(ed) both
they're virtually identical regarding image quality, but the
biggest drawback (for me) with the Canon is the trombone zoom. It
is literally a vacuum for dust and is very difficult to get used
to. USM on the 100-400, while faster than the 80-400/VR, really
isn't all that fast. Once you put the 80-400/VR on a D2H it's right
there with AF speed. Neither are good for sports as the USM on the
Canon isn't that fast compared to some of the primes in that range
or the 70-200/IS.

However, you do make a good point about the TC "issue." Because
Canon's EF lineup is universally compatible their TCs work with
every lens in the system (designed to work with a TC, that is).
This is just one more reason I switched to Canon.

On the whole, you are wrong about them not being competing lenses
however. They are direct competitors. The Canon is just better for
the two reasons you cited, yet I own the Nikkor and sold the Canon.
Go figure.

A revised 80-400 VR with new VR (like the 200-400) and AF-S, for
the same price as the Canon, now that I would look at.

And so would everyone else. Nikon shot themselves in the foot
(again) releasing a "competitor" that omitted AF-S.

Dumb. Dumb. Dumb.

Things that make you go, hmmmm...
