Do you still prefer a D70 over a hacked 300D?

Canon Lenses

There is no doubt that Canon has a wider range of lenses.

As such, there will be areas where they provide better coverage for specific price ranges.

For example, for birding (and wildlife & sport) they have a 400mm F5.6 VR AFS equivalent for USD1000, and a 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6 VR AFS equivalent for USD1300.

Nikon has got nothing to compete with those lenses in that price range (obviously I'm excluding the 200-400mm VR AFS at USD5500 because of the price - and the 80-400mm VR because the AF is too slow, the 300mm F4 AFS hasn't got VR and the range is too short.)

I may just end up buying a second camera just to be able to use the Canon lenses. But not the 300D or 10D, I'll wait for their replacements.

I'll keep the D70 for WA and flash photography.

None of them impress you? or are you speaking about a specific
size lens in a particular price range? It wouldn't surprise me if
in a particular area Canon has some better glass. Therefore what?
If that is the only thing you intend on ever using, then I would
agree with you, Nikon is not for you. But if you cannot find
yourself to be impressed with ANY glass from from Nikon...well,
there just isn't much to say about that. It's really subjective.
if you don't like it, you don't. Any anyone trying to convince you
otherwise is just wasting time.

Granted I'm very new to all this, but I'd be very surprised if you
looked over some "impressive" photographs and could tell each and
every time what camera/lens brands were used.

You all seem stuck on cameras. I'm moving on.

Perhaps you are not impressed with the photographer rather than the
camera. Or are you telling me there are no photographers using a
D70 that impress you? If so...well, not much to say. Move along...

That's fine, but you would be even less impressed if i were using a
d70 with a 80-400vr.

I could give a rat's @ss about the camera, but what can i put on
the D70 that will give me 400mm and excellent image quality and
please don't say the sigma 50-500, tried it didn't like it.

Check 80-400VR, at 400mm stopped down a little bit isn't too bad.

I have checked, looked at many pictures taken with that lens on a
d100, i'm not impressed. Please someone impress me.
