I have a stylus 400 and have been having some problems using the zoom lens in low light. I first noticed it shooting pictures at my brother's graduation where the conditions were poor (dark stage, lit floor where I was shooting from). With no zoom, the pictures come out with decent color, but with the zoom they are dark, almost to the point of being black. Same focus spot, same conditions, but much darker pictures with the zoom. Is this normal, or is something afoot with my camera?

Thanks,
Justin

As you zoom in the aperture changes from 3.1 to 5.2. Most but not all cameras do this. It usually is not noticed if the light is good since the shutter speed will adjust. With poor light, the shutter cannot go slower so the image will darken.

It could also be that the camera is programmed for a faster shutter speed when in telephoto mode to avoid the more extreme effect of camera shake at telephoto.

Thanks guys. The general low light problems I have with this camera makes me think that there may be a DSLR in my future for times when I want better pics under more extreme conditions.
