>Pseudo-IR Tutorial<

Hi All,

The latest STF Challenge calls for IR images. Unfortunately, some of you may not be able to take real IR images due to over-zealous hot-mirrors used in your cameras or inability to connect filters to your cameras’ lenses. To enable you to participate in the challenge I have provided a method of converting normal colour images to pseudo-IR using Abobe Photoshop. I learned this technique from the excellent book “Adobe Photoshop 7.0 for Photographers” by Martin Evening (ISBN 0 240 51690 7).

1. Take a normal colour shot (preferably with loads of green foliage):

2. Go to “Image> Adjustments> Channel Mixer” and change the settings as shown below:

3. Now select the Green Channel from the “Channels” menu:

4. Blur the channel by going to “Filter> Blur> Gaussian Blur”:

5. Then reduce the effect using the “Edit> Fade Gaussian Blur” command:

6. Select ALL channels again

7. Desaturate by going to “Image> Adjustments> Desaturate”

8. (Optional) Perform further blurring of the other channels, use curves to get the correct tonal balance, sharpen using USM.

9. Get the finished result:

So get out there, take some shots, convert them, and enter them in STF Challenge 70!!!!
