Well I have uploaded a lot of images from a trip to the Zoo today.
All images were taken with the D70 and Tamron 28-300 macro lense.

I haven't embeded the images as they would fill out a lot of space, so you can find em all here:

Nice pics, very good compositions. I'm almost afraid to ask...which one was your "girlfriend"? :-)

An excellent portfolio of pictures - there isn't one bad picture on there. Well composed, beautifully lit, good colour, and sharp.

Just one question: which one of the shots is of your girlfriend?

;-)

I like them! Nice and sharp and tight cropping. I like the natural colors on them, like the red bird is strong but natural red, not digital-impress-potetial-p&s-buyers strong and overblown!

Did you use your 80-400VR for these?

Oh, and I also used my powerful hacking skills to hack myself into your artwork album :-) I really dig your work! Really cool! How is it done? Or should I ask that on the phorum...

Tell me one thing. what kind of sharpening did you use. Did you use in camera, or in PS or both?

I have the same combination of lens and body, but did not try it yet, so wanted to get an idea.
Thanks

Thanks Thomas

As you figured out yourself, I made the images with a Tamron 28-300. A small light lense, but not very fast. I am seriously considering saving up for a Nikkor f2.8, vr lense, but that will def. take some time.

Yeah the colors are for most of the images untouched and straight from the camera, and that includes the red bird. A couple was suffering from really flat colors and had a little hue adjustment.

Happy that you liked my drawings too. They are made in Photoshop and/or Painter. I work from scratch on an empty A3 300dpi canvas and start drawing with a Wacom digitzer - no secret tricks, just a huge amount of lines :)

And if your'e from 1973, then you aint old - try being from 1969.....

Regarding metering, then 99% of them were done with matrix metering. I did try a few with center and spot metering, but that went really wrong. So until I learn that, I'll stick with matrix.

ISO was changed a lot during the day, as the weather was changing a lot too. Most were done around 200-400 but some of them were shot up to ISO 1000.

Most images are cropped in camera as you see them, but a few had to be cropped a little more interesting, and that was done in Photoshop.

Colors are almost untouched, only a few had some really boring colors due to some odd light - these images was bumped a little via curves and channelmixer.

Most images were shot with a low f-number in order to isolate the animal as much as possible. As mentioned this lense is not really fast enough, to blur the background on some subjects, I could really have used a f2.8 lense of some sort (I will save for such a beast some day).

In camera settings are as follows:

Exposure mode: Aperture Priority
Metering mode: Multi Pattern
Sensitivity: ISO 200 - 1000
White bal: Auto -1
AF mode: AF-S
Color mode: II - Adobe RGB
Tone Comp: Normal
Saturation: Enhanced
Sharpening: Medium high

Hope this helps..

Normal I just did all my sharpening in Photoshop, but lately I have tried working with a combination of camera sharpening and Photoshop sharpening. I guess I do the camera sharpening now, so I don't get a surprise every time I open the folder with the images and they all seem so soft? But I also do a little sharpening in Photoshop (but only if it needs to be resized for web). My workflow is as following - I open the image and zoom into 100% (so the sharpening is full visible) then I give it a huge amount of sharpening - like 100%, 1, 0. This leads to a VERY sharp image (too sharp) and I fade the sharpening with the fade command (until there are no ugly artifacts and halos etc..). I resize approx. 50% and run USM once more, this time with 100%, 0.6, 0. Again this is way too much and the fade command is used again. Finally I resize 50% more and give it a really slight amount of sharpening, perhaps 120%, 0.2, 0.. This is for web only, so all details are not lost due to the small size. For print I can almost settle with the in-camera sharpening, or a slight conservative amount in PS.
