I'm in the market for a compact digital camera and have narrowed my choices to the Canon S500 or the Fujifilm F700. Does anyone have experience with BOTH who could share their insights? Thanks

I don't have experience with BOTH, but I have had experience with the Canon Elph S100, S110v, S200 and S230. In manyways the successors behave similarly enchancing a thing or two. So allow me to qualify an opinion, as I know the Elph line very well.

In short, I like Canon. In particular the Elph. I think the Elph at its size gives you excellent picture quality. I also happen to like the F700, so it really boils down to a couple of key items:
  • Do you need/want manual controls? Is this important to you?
  • Do you need/want the absolute smallest size possible? Or given that the F700 is already quite small is that ok?
  • have you looked at photos from both cameras? Which ones you like most? Both Canon and Fuji have different white balance and color saturation philosophies...
  • Are you going to do a lot of indoors shooting? Low light indoor shooting?
  • Are you doing a lot of action photography? sports?
  • Are you printing in large sizes? Like 20' by 26' +?
  • Do you usually crop a lot of your photos, trying to bring out details on the cropped area?
  • How important is to you a good movie mode?
-----------------------

I think both are great cameras.. if you answer these questions I may be able to give you a good recommendation or what may be best for you.

Ok it sounds like the F700 will be better for you due to movie & indoor low light shots. Keep in mind though, the S500 will give yoiu more resolution for cropping and if you want/can do long shutter exposure shots, the S500 will be better at that.

I just read that you order a F710 where did you order it from. I'm currently in Malaysia now and they only got the NEW F700. So by the time the F710 comes.....that will be really long long time from now and be outdated by then. What you reckon?

I am ordering from a guy that was posted or mentioned here a while back that sells them on e-bay but you can choose to "buy now" at a fixed price. It should be here in about two weeks.

The F700 is a fine camera.. it all depends how hardcore you want to go.

Thanks a million

I went out to get it....and so far am happy although have not taken much photo's with it yet. Maybe this coming weekend. Will let you know what I think and maybe you could give me tips on how I can use it more efficiently.

Thanks again.

You are welcome! One of the bigggest plusses of the F700 is the speed of the camera (except checking the photo in preview mode...)
