I am really impressed by the resolution and sharpness of the 1Ds together with the 50mm 1.8 (my favourite lens). Thought I'd share some evidense of the remarkable resolution of this combo.

This is 1/80 handheld. Try to imagine this taken with a tripod instead of my shaky hands.

I don't need this much resolution (maximum print is 13x19) and I'd rather have the speed of the 1DII, so I have sold the 1Ds and are waiting for my 1DII to arrive. I shoot with a 10D while waiting for the mkII. I really miss the AF and everyting else from the 1-series. I even miss the weight of the 1Ds.

I added a touch of USM to both of these images. I don't see any point in posting the original unsharpened image since sharpening is needed on almost every DSLR-photo. If anyone else see any point in doing this I'll post it. Images are shot in RAW and procesed with C1.

Note.

Please don't critisize the image. It's only purpose is to demonstrate resolution. I know it's not a great picture.

Wondering if the 1D2 would be a better choice for an all around type camera. My most serious work (garden photography) is slow and would be enhanced by the image quality of the 1Ds. I do like to shoot my daughter's water polo and swimming in which the speed of the 1D2 would be awesome. I just hope the image qualtiy is somewhere in between the 10D and 1Ds.

I see you sold your 1Ds, was that a difficult decision? I would like to her your thoughts if you don't mind.

A 1-series body is a must-have for me. Mostly because I have tasted the sweatnes of it :) But I also know I get far more keepers due to the much better AF.

I loved the 1Ds for:
  • Resolution
  • Handling (apart from speed)
  • Everything else that's in a 1-series body (including weather sealing)
  • Outstanding image quality
  • Full Frame
It's nice to have 11 megapixels to dig into if I need to crop an image. But mostly this is more pixels than I need. When I bought it I thougth: What if I want to go really big on a particular image... Well, I havent felt the urge to go big yet. And with the maybe-go-big argument I should always shoot large format, shouldn't I (exagerated)..

The pros of the mkII for my use are quite many:
  • Speed
  • Buffer (I often suffered from full buffer with the 1Ds)
  • Histogram that really works (fast and R-G-B)
  • Low noise*
  • Orientation sensor
  • ETTL-II (I never became friend with FEL)
  • Price
  • Brighter LCD
  • Newer technology (techy freak shines through :)
  • Better raw file extension (.TIF was a bad choice IMHO)
I know that noise can be really low in the 1Ds, but it's too picky with the exposure for my taste. Hopefully 1DII will be less picky and thus have less noise even if the photographer (who, me?) does a less than good job on the exposure.

Cons with the mkII:
  • Resolution (but I won't miss it for printing on my 2200)
  • FF (but my 17-35 2.8L is soft in the edges, so I don't mind 1.3x)
  • Unsharp :) (just kidding)
For the price I got for my 1Ds I got a 10D and have about the exact amount left to cover for the mkII. 1DII + 10D is more value for me than the 1Ds.

From the start I thought of waiting until the mkII price dropped and availability increased. But having used the 10D for a while I long to much after the 1-series, so I have ordered an mkII. It seems like I'll have it in the May-batch. Sweden will only get a couple of bodies from the April-batch.

Hi Dominique

Of course I'll share my mkII experienses with you. Get back to me when you're in town. Maybe we could have lunch and elaborate over photography. Hopefully I have had time to learn the mkII by then.
