for now sticking to primes, 24 2.8; 50 1.8; 85 1.8. What is the
best way to do macro? Canon 500d or tubes? I dont want to loose
metering or AF. is are there tubes that transfer the functions to
the lense/camera?

Close-up lenses cannot get you very high magnification. If you wish to shot high magnification macro, say close to 1:1, buy a set of Kenko tubes which can pass the AF and metering information to the camera.
