Hello,

I am trying to choose between the 300D and Nikon70D. I now have an oly 5050 but I really miss the zoom. I know this question comes up a lot but I am still confused.

Thanks

Read both forums, go to your local camera shop and play with them, compare feature sets and decide what is most important to you and what you want to do with the camera.

I had almost decided to get the D70 but based on the price and potential problems with the D70, I opted to go with the 300D. Costco had a deal I could not refuse!

Now, if it would only get here quicker..... I should have gotten express shipping!

Pingme,

Your choice is not really the D70 vis-à-vis the 300D... the costs of the 10D and the D70 are similar, and the functionality of each is comparable...

Therefore, you must decide if you want a sub-$1000 dSLR or a ~$1400 one...

If you decide you want the sub-$1000 one, then you get an added bonus of having a wide-angle lens built-in with the kit... AND the CMOS sensor... BUT you must "suffer" the life of a troll and be relegated to whining in here about the lack of features...

I got the sub-$1000 and I am extremely happy with it.

I could have gone for the 10D and been extremely happy with that, too, if I felt like I needed to jack-up all the settings and if I wanted to forgo the wide end until I got a few extra bucks...

If you want to spend D70 money, then compare it to the 10D... because those are comparably priced cams... I think you'll find that the CMOS sensor is the key comparison there, and the lens system... personally, I don't like the Nikon cpu-lens design (but that's a fight I've had with my friends for years because they've been F5 lovers)

If you want the CMOS, a wide lens, and a little bit of learning to know how to tweak the EOS into the custom functions you desire, and want to spend under $1000, get the 300D...

UNLESS, you cannot live without second-curtain synch...

the rest of the things have workarounds, tweaks, and hacks, not to mention gripes, concerns, and whines...

Come to think of it, you'll only be in here whining about the fact that your camera is crippled if you get the 300d, so you might as well get the D70 so you can whine about the moire and Sony CCD instead... but, despite the image probs associated with that CCD, you'll always be able to custom tweak every setting without a hack, tweak, or workaround, but you'll still have gripes, whines, and moans...

So I guess you ought to get the 10D, some great wide angle glass (people seem to like the Sigma 15-30), and be content because otherwise you'll have something to moan about in here, and I don't like those posts, so I'd rather tell you to get something else lest you get amnesia and be back in here in a few weeks telling me via a post that you wanted to be able to change focusing screens and you want a pentamirror instead.

Hope that helps,

Cheers!

No need to be confused, unless you are in such a big hurry that have you no time to investigate.

I can vouch for the 300D as I like mine very much. However, I'm sure the Nikon is also a good camera.

Just spend some time reading the reviews and handle both cameras if you can. The feel of a camera is important. You can download the 300D user manual from the Canon website (don't know if you can do the same with the Nikon).

Final comment: it's so much the camera as the person using it!

jowille,

Being a Costco member, I'm curious as to the deal you got and would appreciate any details you could provide.

Thanks in advance

Gee, who would that help?

Great sarcasm coming from someone like myself has been watching this forume and rolls his eyes everytime someone starts a new petition demanding Canon improve the DR's firmware to improve its performance to equal the $10,000 model...

hbh!

I'm glad that I didn't waste the effort :-)

Who knows, I am trying to get my 300d to cook a hot dog, have you seen a hack for it?

Cheers!

Let's start off with one thing: these are two great cameras, each with a particular strong suit. You won't go wrong either way. Actually, to be sure, the D70 splits the difference between the Canon10D and the 300D.

Advantages -

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

300D. Insanely good picture (described by one reviewer as 'unrealitically clean,' guess he's got vision problems). An uncontested low cost of entry into the DSLR world. A great value.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

D70. Robust featureset, fast capture rate, excellent sports focusing; image quality a shade less than 300D (once they address the moire issue it will be slightly noisier, probably nothing youd detect in an 8x10 print)

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

10D. Awesome features, but with the 300D's image just as good, is it worth the $700 price gap? Maybe if you need a lot of pre-defined user sets, better flash control, faster handling and better AF for sports. If I had no dSLR right now and needed the features, then I'd buy.....hmmm, maybe the D70.

PS As luck would have it, I print 22x28 graphics from my shots, so the 300D is perfect. I'd make the same decision today.

What kind of photography do you enjoy doing? And what is your budget? The 300D kit is about $300 less than the D70 kit. Canon DSLR images tend to be better straight out of the camera than Nikon DSLR images. This is particularly true of JPEG images. Also, Canon images are generally considered to have less noise than Nikon images. That's because Canon uses a CMOS sensor of their own design and manufacture. Also, the 300D has been established on the market for several months now. The D70 just came out, and it looks like it still has some kinks to work out. In the D70's favor, it has features that the 300D doesn't have, like flash exposure compensation, focus mode selection, and a larger JPEG buffer.

Jaatea,

Costco has it listed for $949. It includes camera, kit lens, and two batteries.

I just checked the tracking and it should be here in Virginia tomorrow and delivered Saturday! I can't wait! I should have sprung for the express shipping.....

You don't want to ask me - cause I love my Rebel.

But... for what it's worth...

I'm still not sure about image quality of the D70 - but that is specualtion based on the limited images out there. A few months should tell on that front.

For me the biggest selling point, based on my shooting needs (hobbist shooting landscaps, some action, people shots, and wildlife) the Rebel fits my needs - and at a price less than the Nikon.

If you aren't brand loyal - I would follow the advice you got in your first reply. Get your hands on both cameras in a shop that will let you play a little. Take your own CF with you and take some samples. After you get a feel for each camera - take your CF home and analyze your samples while considering what you liked and disliked about both cameras.

Look around e-bay at lenses for both models and consider avaliabiliy of models of lenses that you woudl be buying. Consider the pricing of those lenses and checkout the lens forums here to get some ideas on what you will need.

Ok, there are some low cost solutions to this, but I think that you should consider the fact that the software needed to convert RAW(NEF) to pictures is not included in the software bundle delivered with the D70.

What's your budget? And which EOS lenses do you already have? More details on your situation will help people give you more detailed recommendations.

This is what I would recommend: Canon 300D + 18-55mm EF-S kit ($1000), Canon 28-135mm Image Stabilizer ($400), Canon 100-400mm L Image Stabilizer ($1300). That would be a great all-round wildlife photography set up.
