I love this picture that I took of a friend but obviously the harsh lighting didn't do her any favors. Her eyes are beautiful but I would like to tone down the lines around her eye's. I am still trying to figure out this gausian blur but as yet I have not been successful. What would you do with this picture. By the way, she has six grown children.

Appreciate your thoughts or help.

Well, I am a real amateur at this, but here is maybe a quick start for what you might want until the "pros" take a stab at it. Using PSP8 I did a soft focus followed by a saturation of "less colorful/strong" then did a USM at .65/125/0 then used Focus Magic at 1/100%. I didn't really take away the lines, but with the soft focus I think she looks a little younger.

Hey Gordon, here's what I did in PS CS. I applied a "digital make-up" using several guasian blurs with different blend methods (painted in the make-up with a layer mask using a tablet for precision). I whitened teeth with yellow saturation reduction and overall lightness increase. I slightly brightened the eyes with curves in a layer mask.

If you like the results then buy this book: The Photoshop CS Book for Digital Photographers by Kelby. All techniques are right out of the book.

Lovely lady by the way.

Joe, I love the results. I just purchased Photoshop CS by Blatner and Fraser and I am trying to wade through that. I will look up the book you mentioned. Thanks for your help,

Thanks Dave, I do like the improvement but it looks a little too made up. I really appreciate your efforts.

Thanks Gordon, glad you liked it. Also look at Photoshop Restoration & Retouching, Second Edition by Eismann. Another great book with amazing techniques for retouching.

Please post a review of the Blatner Fraser book if you think it's worthwhile.

Tried out isteve's highpass set @10;invert to soft light - history brush to bring back eyes, lips. Some cloning between the eyes, no blur, no ni, etc. no sharpening. small s curve. She's got a Meg Fonda/Jane Ryan thing going.

Be careful with the Gaussian Blur....
Hopefully, I didn't go too far with this.

I used the clone tool, healing brush, and slight gaussian blur on her skin. I used the smudge tool to smooth out her hair a bit.

All of the above was done on a seperate layer, and selectively applied where needed.

Vikki, I will have to say that I like your rendition best of all even though each of the poster's that tried have something to offer. I really appreciate your efforts and it will give me something to shoot at. You are an artist.

Thanks for your efforts Kent. It looks a little splotchy but is much better than the original.

Thanks Heather and Gordon.

Heather, I'm guessing these are the settings you're looking for. Although, they would have to be adjusted depending on the image size.
Looking back at what I did for the skin:
Median 14
Gaussian Blur 3.1
Noise 1.6

PS could you post some of the settings you used if you can remember
them! thanks
