is it just me or is anyone else addicted to this board? I feel the need to check it every 20 minutes at work. I have no idea why... its kind of like that natural instinct to open the fridge every time you walk by it, like something new will popup inside it :)... heh... this board has been nothing but help tho. im glad i found it when i was making my first digital camera purches... it helped out allot... thanks dpreview!.

Ditto. I am now a proud owner of an s100. I am nowhere close to being a professional photographer, but am having fun taking pictures with my elph and wanting to learn more. This site helped me make the purchase decision and I have no regrets.

Me too Brian -

I have learned many things from the knowledgable people on the board as well. I am a recent G1 owner - mostly from the info here as well. Fortunately I am retired, and the time I spend reading the files is my own time. Perhaps you should convince your boss to buy a G1 and all the other goodies and join in. (Or are you the boss?)

Regards David-an avid user of the board

Hello,
My name is Curby and I am a "dpreview-A-holic"

Actually, I spend more time on "dpreview" at my job than at home mainly because it is part of my job. I help run the Graphics Dept. at my Television Station. I cleverly convinced the suits that my G1 is perfect for the 20 or 30 publicity photos needed everyday ranging from Exec. shots to Edit Room layouts. They haven't bought my camera yet, but I have free reign on the T1 internet connection for "research" "dpreview research" that is. I used to be very good at quickly minimizing the browser.

Maybe I will convince them to buy me the Canon D60 7.3 megapixel SLR when it is released.

Here is one of the first pictures I took at work of one of our Avids to sell them on my plan. I have improved since this one, but can't post any newer ones. I will try to sneak an album in sometime in the future.

I'm addicted to this site as well. Fortunately, I can close the door to my office. As a new G1 owner (and new to photography in general), I have found this site to be the most informative and helpful. I'm wondering whether I should take a photography class or rely on this site for great tips and save me the money and time for classes.

As someone who works in Internet Security at a "top 5" Fortune 500 comany, I can tell you: You may be able to close the door, but likely there are those who ARE watching. :)

I have to admit, since i desided to buy a digital camera I have checked this site every day. that was over a month ago. Now I check the canon, open, and printer section everytime i go on line.

hi all,
this is one of the most satisfing "INTERNET EXPERIENCES" i ever had...

seriously though i really enjoy reading all the tidbits of info and learning more about my canon extended family anywhere from 100-150 times a day.

Brian,

I thought I was the only one. For some strange reason, I do the same thing...almost like I feel like I am missing something when I am not here. This site has been a valuable resource, enabling me to make a much more informed decision about a new digicam purchase. I hope to be here for a long time.

this and the whole dpreview forums are addictive - nothing to worry about unless it negatively affects your lifestyle; besides my wife approves :> ) i learn something new almost everyday, just be patient with us relative newbies!

Brian, first off, "it's not just you" - all the psychologists tell you that to get you to calm down so the wellness process can begin...

Seriously, I only found this site less than 24 hours ago - and then spent nearly all night up reading it!!! Talk about a hell of a day today at work! In that time, I realized that I HAVE to have a G1 in the near future...despite being a FILM bigot that has denigrated digital photography at every turn! (I actually thought my next camera would be a medium format Pentax or Hass!)

Three important things are coming together on this site:

1) The new 3M pixel cameras are FINALLY worth owning - they can actually compete with filim quality in smaller enlargement sizes, and the camera manufacturers are finally putting better lenses and more manual features on prosumer, relatively affordable cameras. As more people are realizing this, this is THE BUZZ that makes this so fun! (Given that I have been playing around with PCs for 20 years, I can now combine two of my favorite hobbies!)

2) The content on this site is updated frequently, and is VERY complete. Phil's reviews are some of the most complete, in-depth, and objectivly designed that I have been able to find on the web. Simply put, they put most other "review" sites to shame! Because of this, this site attracts some quality readers, who happen to flock to these forums to create a community of quality digital camera enthusiasts. And so it builds on itself...

2) As someone who has used many, many pieces of forum software and workgroup software, I think the DESIGN of this site rocks!!! Sure, minor quibbles, like the fixed width of the forum discussions (hey Phil, some of us have high resolution screens - do you know how much black space their is to the right of this?). But overall, for functionality and presentation pizzazz, I love Phil's site - easy to use, attactive, etc, etc, etc. I would bet that Phil used a package to generate his page templates, but at least he picked a good package..anyway, the overall ease of use makes it a joy to be online here!

Phil, you are doing it all very well...and we are lapping it up, apparently continuously!!!

Ah so very true.

I managed to get off dpreview for awhile... unfortunately, my dad has a digital camera (Kodak DC265). How am I supposed to get off my addiction with substance being freely used within my house?

Anyway, after playing around with it when I took it to a Knicks game (you can see all the pictures at http://www.outloud.org/MSG/ or a select few -ie, the rare good ones- at http://albums.photopoint.com/j/AlbumIndex?u=148011&a=10948832 with a few comments), I got hooked again. I had wanted a Canon S10 for a long, long time but could never afford it- I was in school and never had time for a job. I tried it once but ended up making as much money as I spent on transportation and lunches. Now that I'm taking time off school, I've gotten a job and made quite a bit of money which will allow me to get a digital camera. But, I thought, can't I do better than the S10? Surely by now there was a better model for the money!

Behold the Canon Powershot G1. I'm waiting (read: going out of my mind) for my paycheck to come in, rumor has it that it was mailed last week. I was thinking of getting it at CKC Power Digital (CKCPower.com) for $830, but if any of you know of a good, honest deal on the G1, please let me know. Outpost.com looks good because of its great customer service and free next-day air, however it's $899 for the G1.

I knew I shouldn't have started reading dpreview.com again. Once I get started, I can't stop. Phil's reviews feel like a basketball coach's motivational speech! I've been getting so excited over the G1 that I've been finding myself looking all over the web for pictures and reviews. Goodness I hope that I'll calm down a bit when I'll actually have it.

Damn you Phil! :)

Phil is a very good web app programmer and designer. Read his 'About Us' page. I love reading this stuff. I read the Nikon and Canon forums. I used to own an S10, now a CP880.

You might want to get it at outpost because of the free shipping and excellent service. They will take the camera back no questions asked witin 30 days and you won't feel bad for returning it if you do. CKCPower is also a nice place, but I would feel worse returning a camera because they probably will take a small hit in the pocket to take it back. The guy at CKC is a nice guy. Outpost has a lot of money, so returning stuff doesn't matter as much to them.

Why would I ever want to return it!

I think I see your point. I will probably get it at outpost when time comes. Thanks for the suggestion.

How offensive. Addictive is such a negative, disease oriented word.

Just because I log on first thing in the morning, sometimes come home during lunch just to check the postings, and read everything I can until about 1AM, it doesn't mean I'm addicted. Does it? This forum has almost completely replaced food, sex and any small amount of ambition I used to have. I see no problem.

I found this site a few days ago and being a new G1 owner it felt as if I arrived at a private club where every one is welcome.

Having lived 'overseas' for 15 of the past 20 years I also felt as if I was still in an international community where we speak of things that binds us, not of things that divide us.

....and it felt good.
