That can be a problem as many digitcal cameras have an IR filter over the CCD. The original Dimage 7 does not and is particularly well suited to IR.

Sony 828. I tried one in the store with both a weak (R72) and strong (RM90) filter. It is handholdable. Unlike 717, they don't appear to restrict you to weird shutter speed/f stop combinations...

Steve,
This might just be the ticket.

To buy (I also think they will modify your cam, for a price)

Or if you're a do-it-yourselfer:

Unfortunately, the 828 is crippled even more so than the 7X7's. Using NightShot mode, the max shutter speed is 1/30. Versus the 1/60 limit, in the 7X7's. It still takes fine IR shots. But, you are limited by the speed and the wide open shutter.

I own a F828, and do a lot of infrared photography.

Unfortunately it is shutter-speed limited in nightshot mode to 1/30th max shutter speed. A IR filter plus a ND filter will let you take handheld shots, at 8 megapixels and get great results. The limitation is similar to the 717's.

You can use an IR filter over the lens and shoot in manual mode, but without using nightshot mode the exposures are usually a couple seconds - not handholdable.

My last camera was a Coolpix 950, which did great infrared, usually 1/60th in bright sun. The results were great for what it was, but it is only two megapixels. I much prefer the handling of the F828 of course.

With an R72 filter and bright day, you can shoot 1/30-1/60 f2.8. And, with the image stabalized lens, that lets you go hand held even with zoom...

Here's an example (with EXIF):
