Okay, I've heard mentioned here in the forum different A1 setups for a protective filter (skylight or UV) over the lens.

I'd like the forum's ideas on what each of you think is the BEST way to protect the lens yet avoid vignetting.

Some possibilities:

a> 49mm filter (a "narrow" one? - suggestions as to brand?)
b> 49-> 52 step-up with 52mm filter
c> 49-> 55 step-up with 55mm filter
etc., etc.

It would be interesting to heard not only WHAT everyone is doing in this regard, but also WHY...

Many thanks,

I suppose the BEST way to protect the lens and avoid vignetting is to leave the lens cap on and never take pictures. But that's not very much fun...

Seriously though, "best" is a very subjective term. What's best for me may not be best for you. My "best solution" was a 49mm Quantaray filter. (~$10 at Kitz.) It's cheap, I didn't see any vignetting, and I can easily leave it on all the time.

Best way to figure out your best solution is to go to a photo store and try out their filters.

I recieved my A1 just this afternoon.....still charging up the batteries. Based on what I've been reading here on this forum I ordered a UV filter and step up ring from B&H Photo.
Hoya HOUVMC49
49mm Haze UV(0) (HMC) Multi-Coated Glass Filter ... 14.95

B+W BWSUR4962
49mm to 62mm Step-Up Ring (Lens to Filter) #3c ... 19.95
Hope it's the correct items for the A1.
I agree protect the lens.

Because you can use the original sunshade which is really an essential part of the lens system. Hoya is doing well, Marumi (which I have) is doing well.

When you want to use an (linear) polarizer, you certainly don't want to screw it on top of another filter, so you have to screw it off always, when using a polarizer: Independent of the diameter of a (future) polarizer.

I have a B+W slim 49mm UV and does not vignette.

Barry, I can say with all honesty that I have no problems with my uv filter what-so-ever. That maybe because it's in the drawer with other useless bits of glass at home.

I accept that I am in a minority here but I cannot accept that once you have paid so much money for one of the best digital lenses around you then go and stick a cheap bit of glass in front of it. I'll take the manufacturers lead thank you, and use the lens cap. A uv filter gives little to no photographic advantage and another two surfaces to keep clean. Not for me, but hey, it's a free world.........

Denis.

Only one problem Mashuga. If you ordered a 49 to 62mm stepup ring, then you should have ordered a 62mm filter, not a 49mm one.

Jeff,
