I recently got a used 200mm/2.8L to go with my 300D and have been playing wildlife-shooter with it. As others have pointed out here, while it's a nice sharp lens it really is a little bit short for this purpose. All of the pictures below are crops of the center 50% or less of the frame. Still, it makes me never want to use my 28-135 again.

Anyway here are a few pictures of my pals the coyotes:

Your pictures are very nice and sharp but IMHO the contrast is too high don't you think? Maybe because of the harsh sunlight, maybe the post processing or maybe both. Anyway, I think a little ps could bring back some shadow details and make your pictures even better (at least for me).

Just my 2 cents. Tks for sharing.

Go get yourself a 1.4X and 2X for longer reach. It loves TC or even TC's.

Hi Fred

Lovely and crisp, your pics. Very impressive lens. good catchlight in the eyes, particularly in the first two pics.

Cheers

Hi Fred,

I'm jealous! Looks like you've got some great subjects.

Yeah, the 200 mm is probably too short. Try a 1.4 TC, it might work. I liked the last two, especially the stretch. The backlit shots aren't so hot because of how great they blend it -- you just can't see much but black. Frontlit is definitely the way to go.

FWIW, the problem of critters disappearing is just part of the game. You've got a lot of years of evolution designed so that you can't see them very easily. A tough row to how, but you're definitely getting some great shots.

Great shots Fred. Can I ask how much you paid for this used and where? I've been wanting one for some time now. Post any more pictures you get with this setup. Keep up the good work. : )
