D70 & new 18-70 DX Nikon

The December printed edition of the French Magazine "Chasseur D'Images" has a article on the D70.

They say or rumour that the D70 will be using the same Sony CCD as the D100, that is same resolution. However, it will be a Phase 2 CCD with better signal to noise ratio, better dynamic range and improved performance due to a new internal algorithm.

There will also be a new 18-70 (27-105 in 35mm equivalent) DX Nikon lens which will be released at the same time as the D70. Contrarily to the 18-50 Canon 300D kit lens, this trans-standard Nikon zoom lens can be used on all APS Nikon digital bodies. Fulls specs of body & lens will be disclosed at PMA in February 2004.
Price of the D70 is 1,100 Euros in France

Price of the lens is 600 Euros in France. So at this price, I expect it to be much better than the $100 Canon 18-50 kit lens for the 300D only or the $150 Sigma 18-50, F3.5 lens. This lens will also match the need of those who find the 17-55 F2.8 DX too expensive, or too much of an investment for a non FF lens.
The rumours of Chasseur D'Images have all the times proved to be very accurate.
So, good news for prospective Nikon DSLR buyers.

Best Regards
John
