I went out today without putting the CF card back in my Rebel. Took a number of pics before I realized the CF card wasn't there. The camera gave me no sense that something was wrong.

Hey Canon, if you're listening. Silent failures are a bad idea.

This warning is available on all of their other DSLR's. It's a shame they left it out. :(

after taking each picture. It's not the best notification, but it's better than nothing at all.

I think most of us have done that at one time or another, though. If you start examining the histograms after taking pictures you might get yourself into the habit of looking at the LCD more frequently and avoid repeating this unfortunate situation.

Gee - Thats strange! I just turned on my Rebel D and right off the bat there is a big statement on the screen that says "No CF Card". I then snap a picture and the same statement was at the top of the screen.

You must be using your camera as a point and shot and not paying attention to wht it is trying to tell you.

Yep, I'm pretty sure that mine is pretty clear in letting me know when my CF isn't in...

Charles,

The 300D only gives the "no CF card" warning when it has just been turned on or reawakened, and then only on the back-panel monitor.

Not too good an arrangement , in my opinion.

Best regards,

Doug

Yeah, a 200 dB siren, flashing lights and a giant hand that comes out of the camera and slaps your face would be less easy to miss ;-)

[Why does everything in this forum have to result in some sort of insult?]

You are correct, I was using as I normally do and normally get excellent shots without inspecting every frame I shoot. Many times, the glare conditions in the sun make it fruitless to look at the lcd. I have a lot of confidence in my usage of this camera so I don't look at every histogram, especially when I'm jumping out in the road to take shots and such. There are many audible alarms telling you such things as "focus achieved" and such. But nothing equivalent for a failure to write. Some other cameras will refuse to tak ethe picture, and I think that's approriate.

Yeah, my EOS-5 would do that. Let me shoot a roll of film without bothering to put any in it. They were cheap to process, though :) There is a warning if the sun isn't so bright you can't see the bloody thing...

Mine shows a histogram after each shot, card or no card. It does say in small words above it no card but that isn't what I was focusing on when I looked at the histogram after each shot and I missed some shots that were gone forever. Yes, my fault but it wasn't because I was trying to use it as a point and shoot. IMO it is simply poor design.

I was not trying to insult you but just pointing out the obvious (which was not obvious). I have used my old Minolta S304 with the lens cap on using the viewfinder only (the bright sun washes out any other possibility). The camera will take pictures and appear to focus. My only warning was the person in front of the lens calling me names. In other words, been there done that!

Maybe Canon will listen. I am sure that all of the responders including myelf will take a bit more care to ensure we don't make a similar mistake (that is what this forum is all about!!! :-) ).

Enjoy your Christmas!

Hi,

1.Just observe the 'number of shots left' on the LCD screen and U will have it.

2. Review pics often.... u cant review pics if no CF card is available

3. Develope habit of checking before every shooting session

I felt a complete idiot when I tried to preview the image and realised the card was in the reader 6 miles away.....

I was annoyed at Canon - but the camera can be connected via Video Out, so it has to work without a card.

A warning in the viewfinder would have helped.

I expect it's to make ex-SLR guys feel at home. Wouldn't be the same if you couldn't rattle off a load of pics without putting any film in ;-)

Paul, even a 200 dB camera siren is not going to help you there, is it?

It will just make you even more fustrated, when you discover the CF card is missing, and you are already 6 miles aways from home.

What you need is a house alarm that get triggerred when you leave home without a CF card :-)

I think it is best to have two smaller CF cards than one big one, so you ALWAYS have a backup in the camera bag.

Yep, film Rebel will also let you snap away without a single roll of film inside the camera. To stop you using the DR or give you any warning when there is no CF card is a definite NO-NO for the Rebel line, Canon will never let that happen!

What's wrong with you, guys?

If the message was bigger, some would be shouting "I CAN'T SEE THE PICTURE BECAUSE THE F* G MESSAGE IS BLOCKING THE VIEW!! O, CANON, DO YOU TAKE ME FOR A IDIOT NOT TO KNOW I HAVE NO CF??!?!?!?!......."

Forgive my poor english
