**MINI CHALLENGE #793** UP IN THE AIR

These are so special to me, thanks for the memory prompt! Miss them since we moved from Richmond.
You had them in Richmond? They ARE a truly amazing sight as they pass through near us every year.
snip
Greg, the Richmond Snow Geese are part of the so-called Skagit and Fraser Valleys flocks. Their numbers have increased over many years and now there can be more than 100,000 over winter. They arrive late September/early October and leave again March/April. I always found them fascinating and have hundreds - if not thousands! - of photographs of them plus probably ten videos on YouTube. You can see one typical example HERE . The first half was shot in rather cloudy, windy conditions but after some time the sun came out with better visuals.

And by a huge coincidence, we just had a small formation of them flying by us here in Abbotsford! The first we have seen this season.

Nick, my apologies for a derailment/distraction to your excellent challenge!
No apologies needed! I appreciate the stories that go along with these challenges. That's a great video you linked - reminds me of my Wisconsin childhood when our family would make driving trips through the Horicon Marsh this time of year to see similar numbers of Canadian Geese.

Brilliant theme for these challenges!

Thanks for these. I'm going to say the first appeals to me much more than the second for personal selfish reasons (I'm not a fan of shoveling). Glad to see you're getting mileage out of the supposedly obsolete M6!

..You may award me with an HM: I used the generative Remove tool of TOPAZ Photo AI to remove the stick where the sculpture is resting on..,
Oh Ab, how the mighty have fallen....

At first, I thought it was some exotic stone pigeon thing that somehow was suspended. I should have known better.

The esteemed panel will consider suitable responses!

This was taken during my daughter's field trip to Washington DC. I believe I took the shot outside the Air & Space Museum, but honestly, I have no idea what it is. If anyone knows please tell me. Thanks.
That is interesting - either an antennae or a metal Pippi Longstocking. I'm going to look the other way however as far as up in the air (it is stuck to the ground after all...)

Thanks RJake1

More likely an artistic implementation of a lightning rod. Does not look like a shape suitable for an antenna.

Thanks Kit. Nice variety of subjects. I caught myself looking at the balloons in Morocco. I have a modest case of claustrophobia so such a ride would be definitely off limits. But it must have been spectacular.

Nothing planned, got out of the car, I saw them, and my guess was correct, coming in for a landing

Nick, the balloon ride was actually super smooth. I did not really sense any unusual motion either up and down or sideways. The gondola is divided into 4 quadrants, with 2 occupants in each quadrant. There was quite a bit of room to move around to look in each direction. We did the ride at dawn; I believe that's when the air is calm and the ground has not heated up to create convection currents.

This is a picture as we were coming in for the landing.

I've heard that a balloon ride in Turkey is spectacular. Maybe, one day.

Nice! And it's nice to be at the right place at the right time. I like the second image as it conveys what's about to happen - you have watch how it all turns out.

Thanks,
Nick

Our son Peter always planned on taking us on a hot air balloon ride for our anniversary. Sadly it never happened and he died in March of 2017. We went that year with our remaining son Chris and spread some of his ashes while up there.

The basket starts sideways, see the fuel tanks and burners, and notice the big fan

You get them started laying on the ground with the big fan (that's Chris in the grey shirt).

You think, romantic ride for 2, hardly, they crammed that basket full, I'm the guy with white hair, Donna is to the right of Chris (not my photo)

This was an annual festival, quite a lot of balloons of curious designs, they rise and fall quite close to each other, you gotta give the drivers credit for their skill
